Whey Protein, when to drink it?

Hey everyone,
I recently purchased some Whey Protein from Holland and Barrett's (banana Flavour) and I was wondering when I should take it?
I go to the gym 3 times a week (usually Monday, Wednesday and Friday) Should I drink it before I workout and After, in the mornings or before I go to bed?
This will be my very first time drinking it, I'm 16 years old, 6ft tall and weight 88.9kg.
I will be using it to increase muscle mass and lose fat.

What should I mix the whey protein with, I was thinking some extra fruit or some sort of whole grain or something along those lines!

Here are the statistics for the Whey Protein I purchased
Each(22g)serving contains:
Energy 350kJ and 83kcal
Protein 16.6g
Carbohydrate 1.4g
of which sugars 0.8g
Fat 1.2g
of which saturates 0.44g
Fibre 0.1g
Sodium 0.06g

Thank you!

I've found that a shake about 45 mins before the gym doesnt make me feel too bloated to train and then one within 30 mins of finishing training. Remember the carbs once you've trained as well, a bottle of luco or similar before the protein shake is a good idea.

Luco being lucozade?
Do you mean remember to eat carbs or just take not of how many carbs I take?
How much would I need to take, isn't it like 2x each lb you weigh in protein per day?

Sorry yes I meant lucozade. I'm not sure on the specific figures. I've been training for about 15 years now and as far as I'm aware you should take in about 35g protein every 2 hours or so, your body can't absorb more than that. But after training you can double it. Each year I hear different things but these are the figures i work to. Regarding the carbs, I think about 1/2 a litre of lucozade is good once you've trained. My mate who is really into it also has white bread before training. The best thing you could do is join one of the body building forums and ask on there.

Heya,

I have always thought about drinking Protein shakes but dont know if I should. Is it used for just weight lifting... I do cardio in the gym for about an hour, 2 times a week (maybe 3...) Should I be drinking these protein shakes to speed up weight loss??

Protein powder is primarily used to aid muscle gain and recovery.

If you find you're really aching after a gym session then it might be worth taking protein within 30 mins of finishing your session - it definately stops me feeling so achey the next day.

If you're not having any problems however, then don't feel like you need to be taken any extra supplements. If you did want to start adding in resistance work (which would build lean muscle - and as muscle burns more calories it can really complement your cardio weight loss) then it might be a good idea to start taking it, or even if you needed a low calorie snack in between meals.

Check the carb/protein content of shakes if you buy them though, if you want a low calorie one, go for 100% whey protein as the one's with carbs tend to have more calories.

Also check the content of protein in it. The body can only process a certain amount of protein in one sitting I think it is 30mg. This way you may be able to drink less (which by the taste of most shakes is a good thing) this also can save you money which is also a good thing :)

I'm with CDavies, I was going to say don't feel you have to stick to a certain serving. Like he said, the body can only process so much so can have a smaller serving. Personally I can't stay protein shakes and I don't kill myself so much that I need them to aid muscle recovery, so I don't really bother with them. I think a lot of people think they have to have them if they go to the gym but the majority of people really don't.

Protein shakes are not such a good idea if you are looking to lose weight. I'd recommend reaching your goal weight before mixing weight training with high protein intake. :)

ah okay... so for weight loss then the shakes aren't a good idea...

I know someone though who is eating a normal breakfast and a normal lunch... and then is having a shake for lunch. Is this healthy? He seems to be loosing weight with it.

They're mainly for building muscle. I think if it's a meal replacement you want. Them slim fast shakes are you best bet :)
