coughing up blood

My dad told me today that he's been coughing up blood for almost a week, I could have screamed at him for not telling me before. I got straight on the phone and made him a Dr's appointment for tomorrow morning. Obviously, I know worst case senario is cancer, but does anyone know what else could be causing it? Im so worried. I lost my mum to cancer 5 years ago, and am now petrified I will lose my dad too, Im not even 30 yet

oh hun ((( )) i hope its something like a cut inside or something. good luck hun do let us know.

He had to have blood tests and a chest x ray today. He's a smoker and has been for about the last 40 years (dispite my best efforts to get him to stop) They have told him the results will take a week, but Im thinking that if they found something serious, they would be in touch sooner. They were when my mum was ill. Im just praying that it will be something really minor.

Oh Di.D, really feel for you, coughing up blood is called haemioptisis, and of course there are lots of reasons other than cancer, just need to wait for results and go from there, waiting for results i know can be torture and you will need to be really supportive for him, try to stay strong sweetheart, rant at me if it helps, please let us know how you get on, talking about how you are feeling will help keep you sane. xx

Oh hun! Thinking of you and your Dad. I hope all will be well for you both xx

Thinking of you hun.Do keep us posted. xxx

That's good sweet, if it was anything sinister I would imagine they'd want him before then xxx

just a quick update. My dad go his results, and there's no signs of shadows on the chest x-ray. Thank goodness. The Dr can't work out where the blood is coming from though, so has referred him to have a broncoscopy withing the next 2 weeks.
