No dairy on SW?

Honeyoc

Is a crunchy mama!
Hi guys! Does anyone here follow SW whilst avoiding dairy? I'm exclusively breastfeeding and I think my little girl is reacting to the dairy products I've been eating. Just thinking back, Ive noticed that she cries and fusses a lot and comes up in a rash when I eat a lot of dairy. Last night I ate lots of cheese (that's another story!) and this morning her rash is a lot worse and she hardly slept during the night.

As I'm breastfeeding I'm on 6 healthy extras a day (usually have 2 As and 4 Bs) but I'm going to cut out dairy for a few weeks to see if there's an improvement. So I guess I'll be having SIX B choices

I'd love to hear from anyone following SW with no dairy (vegans welcome!) and how you're working the plan taking that into consideration. Thanks!

Not at the moment but did whilst bfeeding my lactose intolerant daughter.

I'd cut the dairy out totally for a few days and see if baby improves. T was better within 48 hours (at 3 months old) and that meant the GP put her through for testing, dietician referral and dairy free / soya free formula on prescription straight away (so I could go out occasionally!!).

Just a quick thought hunni, could it be nuts or shellfish (I've been reading your lovely food diary). I think I'd be tempted to rule those out first (but I'm a cheeseaholic).

Alternatively could it be a heat rash? My little miss has had rashes on and off in this heat.

You are her mum and I always say follow your instinct. Xxx

It's possible... I didn't notice any changes in her the day we had those oysters though... Same with nuts. But I have noticed big changes with dairy, especially when I eat a lot at a time. Same thing happened when we were in Australia when she was 6 weeks old. But it could also be the heat as it was hot there too as it is here. Not much I can do about the weather lol!

I'll try eliminating dairy first and check for improvements, as it's apparently a common allergy, especially with babies of African lineage. If her skin gets better, I'll reintroduce dairy slowly and if she flares up again then I'll know for sure. Hopefully she won't! If there's no improvement then well I guess it'll be something else! Lol! It's a huge myth that breastfed babies have perfectly flawless skin! Humpf!

Just been looking through Ocado and oat milk looks like a good alternative for now. It's probably not a healthy extra but I'll go with it anyway (similar nutritional values to semi skimmed milk, so I'll have 250ml as an "HEA". I'll just have to do without my beloved Greek yogurts for now! Didn't realise how dependent I was on dairy!

Depends what the problem is (if it is dairy). If it's lactose, you might get away with cooked milk as it's broken down or goats milk products as it's naturally low, or there's always lactofree. In the meantime either get calcium enriched milks or some calcium tablets (got mine on prescription in the end).

If you're going dairy free, read all labels. There's often milk in mayo, tommy sauce, bread, crisps, ham, chicken slices and gravies. Vitalite is dairy free, as is Stork blocks (but not tubs!). If you're struggling to find something, shout. Oh and watch medicines too - Ashton and Parsons teething powders caught us out good and proper...

Good luck!

Hi I am 90% dairy free I can tollerate 1 yogurt or a tiny bit of cheese

I had to do a 100% exclussion when breastfeeding my youngest(also had to exclude eggs, soy, and food chemicals including naturally occuring)

its not too hard once you have a milk alternitive

you can buy oat yogurts too dont know the syn value but im sure if bf you could use it as a Hex A

Oatly is 250 mls for a Hex A in both the plain and chocolate varieties. Good luck with going non-dairy - its surprising where it crops up!

Oh that's great, had no idea! Oatly was the brand I was considering. Thanks!

Louisa I never knew eggs were a potential allergen! Will have to bear that in mind.

I've been reading through ingredients of foods I eat regularly and so far none of them contain dairy. Fortunately I cook everything from scratch and prepared to bake my own bread and cereal bars if necessary.

Thanks guys!

Hi There,

I was dairy free for my first 3 months of SW. I found Kara dairy free milk great Welcome to Kara (at the bottom of the page) 400mls is a HEA and it can be used in tea and coffee without splitting.

Ooooooh that was another one I was considering lol. Waitrose is so great, they have EVERYTHING! I wonder if it would be any good for curries.... Lol.

you should avoid other animal milks the protien (which babies tend to react to) is very simular

There is so much they can react to and my Alyssa if you can react to it she will she is being weaned Dairy, Soy, Egg, gluten, rice free and on low salycilates (a natural food chemical in fruit and veg) we have confirmed dairy, soy, egg, sals and rice the onl one dietion said to avoid though we haven't trialed is gluten, but she cant digest grains anyway due to no stomach acid because of reflux medication :(
