going away!

Hi, I'm going away in 2 weeks and I know it's going to involve eating out & going to the pub! Obviously I'm going to be really carefull. Do you think vodka & diet coke is that bad??

Although it's one of the better alcoholic options, alcohol will bring you out of ketosis and so that's likely why Dr Dukan says it should be avoided. It could affect your weight loss, but you seem to be at quite a low weight anyway.

Hi, obviously I'm gona try & not drink too much but I want to enjoy myself! I haven't drank so far & I normally have a glass of vino every nite so I think I've done well.

It's not just the taking you out of ketosis that's gonna be a potential problem. I have drank a couple of times whilst on dukan and alcohol has affected me alot quicker and made me feel really ill - I'm talking vomiting which didn't normally happen to me - pre dukan. So i decided nt to drink on it. My body is working so hard at the minute to digest all the protein I'm eating I want to help it out as much as I can.

Also if u think about how much extra strain our kidneys are under with the high protein then alcohol is gonna put them under even more strain. It's up to you what you do but if I'm gonna knock myself out of ketosis for anything it would b for an amazing slap up meal with an amazing desert not for a few drinks which will only make me ill after (just to be clear I'm not actually gonna eat an amazing slap up meal but hopefully u get what I mean - if u cheat on someone you don't cheat someone ugly - not that I've ever cheated on anyone.... Argh I don't think I'm making my point)

No judgment though. Each to their own x

Hi, thanks for your advice & I understand what your trying to say. I'm not gona be daft but I just fancied 1 or 2. Someone told me that vodka won't take you out of ketosis, but I'm not sure.

It probably would but I think it's the probs the best thing u could drink. I'd defo avoid wine x

A serious question. If you can't stick to the rules of cruise for the very few weeks it should take to get you to your goal, how are you going to stick to the rules of consolidation to ensure that you don't shoot back up in weight later.

Think very carefully - putting your body into ketosis to lose weight is not something to be done lightly, particularly not when you are already at a normal bmi.
Dukan just isn't a diet you can mix and match as it suits you. a.) it will just stop working, and b.) and you could make yourself ill.

I would suggest you have only two choice here -

1.) stick to the plan and the commitment you have already made by starting Dukan, and don't drink vodka until you reach conso (and then only as one of your "gala" outings).
or
2.) stop Dukan now, and swap to a balanced healthy eating diet which will allow you to drink if thats what you would really like to do.

From what I've been reading it may be rather dangerous to drink on ketosis, though views on this are contradictory.

It's the "not all calories are equal" part of Dukan. Just as Glucose and Fructose are much more easily "burned" by the body, than Lactose causing spikes of insulin etc - Alcohol is "burned" even faster than Glucose.

(Presumably this is why both Corn Sugar (HFCS) and Alcohol both contribute to fatty liver disease.

In my experience (I drank a double gin in my last week but one of cruise) I was, (to quote a colleague) "slaughtered" in minutes, ("in 8 years I've never seen you so out of it"), fell asleep in the taxi on the way home, and woke up with a 2 day hangover, ravnously hungry, and aching as if I had been beaten head to toe with an iron bar.

I also weighed 2 lbs more, and a week later was still not back into ketosis.

Niche - vodka is not part of the Dukan diet in any way. As far as I can recall, the diet only mentions wine - one glass - for those times when you really, really feel you must drink, followed by a couple of days of pp, extra water, and extra walking to get it out of your system.

Hi, thanks for all the replies. I know alcohol isn't in the diet, but I just wanted to know that if was to happen. What would be best. Some people say vodka and some are saying wine. Wine does have sugar and carbs. Vodka doesn't have carbs.

It isn't about the carbs - alcohol itself acts as a superfast energy source in the body, and will knock you out of ketosis, with the possibility of making you feel very sick soon after.

Hi there!
Alcohol of any kind always metabolizes into sugar regardless if it's wine or vodka. :p I'm more of a wine drinker but haven't had any since I started Dukan. Have fun on your vacay! ;)

I'm by no means an expert but I thought I'd share my experience. I met a friend a couple of Saturday nights ago and had a few vodka and diet cokes (like you I thought I could be good and it would be ok) Big mistake, it almost put me back to the start, infact I was hungrier, had no energy and generally felt rubbish for about 3 days afterwards. And of course the alcohol, however little, led me to make a bad choice and I had some chips and cheese. I did not gain anything from any of it and realise it was absolutely not worth it. It probably pushed me back by about a week. That said, only you can decide whats best for you, but I know it's not something I'll be doing again. This is a very strict diet and to fall now, so early in, perhaps means you're better off trying something else. Unless of course you're like me and your resolve comes flooding back :) Good luck

Vodka shmodka

I to am going away and will have been on Dukan for 4 weeks. I have every intention of sticking to the food side of things with poached eggs and such like at breakfast in hoteland have planned to eat a chicken kebab in the Indian I have booked. I have had a couple of wines since starting and to compensate for the calories have done some extra excersise. I must admit you certainly do not need a bucket full as after one I felt half gasses. However my philosophy is I am in for the long haul and if it takes me an extra couple of weeks to get to target because I am off on holiday then so be it. Your only here once and can get back on the Dukan horse. I am not cheating in any other way. Dont go mad like I did and have 3 wines and paid the price the next day with massive sore head but 3 days later lost another 2 pounds. Enjoy!
