I was just reading up on Ketones and came across this....

Too many ketones in the blood leads to 'Ketoacidosis' a potentially fatal condition.
Scared me a little!!

Please can someone shed some light for me!!

Thanks,.

that should nt happen to an atkinser ............. its for type 1 insulin dependent diabetics ............so don't worry x

Hi
Ketoacidosis is associated with diabetes type 1 where no insulin is produced, as insulin production regulates the ketones in the body when in a state of ketosis. So those without diabetes, i.e. those who do produce insulin should be fine as their insulin production will balence the ketones in the body so that only a mild level, which is still good enough for fat burning, can be achieved. Those diabetics who can't produce any or enough insulin may very well find that their body can't get rid of ketones and a state of ketoacidosis occurs. Happened to my sister a few times without even being on a low carb diet, and she lives to tell the tale thanks to swift treatment.

So if you are fit and healthy your body should not go into ketoacidosis.

Don't worry about asking questions. It's fine and is what keeps us all loving these boards as we all discover things we didn't know or never thought to ask x
