School Packed Lunches

Has anyone had their kids school tell them what they can put in packed lunches? My friend just told me he got 'told off' by his kids teacher the other day for putting a bit of Jamaica ginger cake in his 5 year olds lunch box. Apparently you aren't allowed to put sweets or chocolate or cake in your kids lunch boxes anymore??

The other items in the lunchbox were ham sandwich, carrot sticks, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and an apple.

Is it just me, or is this completely mental, not to mention not their business. SW is all about a balanced healthy diet - seems to me this kids lunchbox was exactly that.

I am really confused!

Yup!

Ours aren't allowed any form of chocolate, sweets, crisps or cakes!

Drives me mad!

Oh and if you don't 'adhere', your child gets 'told off' and you get a note home!

I'll feed y child what the blummin ell I like!!

This was the point my friend made to the teacher. He delivers foods to schools & knows how bad they are. When he pointes out he delivers cakes & the like every day to schools he was told they were 'healthy' cakes!!

Grrr this makes me angry no wonder kids grow up messed in the head re food. My friend is only allowed to send her kids to school with water for their lunches. Not allowed no sugar squash or diet pop at all!!!

OMG so glad you posted this. It drives me crazy! Our school regularly sends out letters about this. My daughter had a two finger kit kat taken off her the other week :( She had a cheese sandwich, chopped up grapes, a cheese string, yoghurt and 2 finger kit kat. Ok 2 lots of cheese but she doesn't have cheese all the time its ham sometimes etc but whats really wrong with this at age 7 and not big??

We were given a list of things we weren't allowed to put in our kids lunch boxes when they started, one being bars of chocolate but things like Penguins, Kit Kats are allowed, because they are biscuits. Mine will have a wholemeal sandwich, fruit, cheese or yougart, and some chocolate. I did get told off once for putting 3 Percy Pigs in! I don't really see these as sweets, personally, and my kids know to leave the "sweet" things till last. That way if they are full, they don't get eaten! I must admit, I did ignore them, and carried on putting what I wanted in their lunchboxes!! :)

Yep, same in my lad's school. BUT, my son does not drink plain water, never has done, apart from fizzy water. So I put flavoured water in his lunchbox, because he needs to drink something and if school complains, I will argue the case. Nothing with chocolate either, their rationale for it is the nut allergy of some kiddies.
So my boy's usual lunchbox contains a sandwich, apple or banana, the flavoured water, cheese and a small packet of milk or jammy dodger bickies. And I will not/cannot change it as he is a funny eater. Our school sends out info letters re lunch all the time, but they can sort their own sub-standard lunches out they offer children who have school lunches, before they interfere with our lunchbox. Bleeming lunchbox spies. At least what my son eats is fresh, contains vitamins, no additives.

I make cakes from home for people. There is NO such thing as a healthy bloody cake.

Sugar, Margarine and flour are NOT healthy ingredients. Crock of crap.

The thing that worries me most about this (aside from the fact they are trying to tell you how to feed your kids) is that if you deprive children of these things at a young age, the moment they are in charge of their own food they are likely to go crazy & eat it all - without having been taught the concept of moderation. They might to helping to tackle childhood obesity - but they are potentially creating problems for later on.

Apparently they tell the child they can't eat it if its in the lunchbox - most kids will do what teacher says i suppose at that age

this is awful! my little girl is starting school this year and thats absolutely ridiculous to say what can and cant be put in their lunch boxes!

i understand that perhaps you shouldnt really put chocolate bars (e.g twix or mars) in them and not a ridiculous amount of sweets either (although i think this is cos they have to deal with the hyper kids ;) ) but they cant tell you not to put a penguin or something in there surely?

pfft..if my daugter came home upset cos she'd been told off about it i would go crazy. i agree that it sends out bad messages about food- like saying "eating this is naughty" which can lead to guilt about eating it which could lead to all sorts of eating problems! rant over :) xxxx

I had this at my eldest's old lower school, she is at middle school now and doesn't get this. Just no fizzy drinks is the only rule we have. The littlest goes to a very small village school. They don't ahve this becuase the school dinners are so yum that no-one has packed lunches.

You are lucky. Our Council here is like the KGB. :sigh:
And the school lunches are disgusting, proper pre-fab, processed food, yuk.
Never mind, we relocate to Hampshire in September, I hope the Council there is less of a wanna-be-nanny to the citizens.

Hate to tell you this. Hampshire is where i live & they are just as bad.

Thankfully the school dinners at my daughter school are very good so she has them (& there is even the odd biscuit or icecream as pudding!!) For their morning break they have to bring a healthy snack monday to thursday along with a drink (anything so long as its not fizzy) & then on friday they are allowed to bring whatever they want as friday is 'treat day'. Some other local schools i have heard can be a nightmare over what is & what isnt allowed in a child's lunchbox though

My 4 year old daughter was in trouble at school she says because I had put her 2 small cartons of flavoured water in and she's only allowed one ! Last week it was because I had put a small fromage frais yoghurt and a froobes tube style yoghurt in !!! Drives me bloody mad !!!!!!

I do think it is wrong if the staff make the children feel as if they have done something wrong. The "fault", if that's the right word, is not the child's!

I remember seeing something on QI not so long ago that said that research had established that things like sugar and "E numbers" didn't really have any effect on children's behaviour, despite everyone believing that they do!
