Chinese 5 Spice Powder

m-mouse

Not very good at this!
Ground Szechwan pepper? And where does one find that?
I've some star anis - always wondered what they were for!

I just used whole everything and ground it up myself. I can send you some if you can't get it or bring it out?

awh you lovely Mouse you... or, even, you could just bring me a little envelope of your preground stuff :D

I'll be missing out the pepper as I don't like the stuff.

Try an Oriental supermarket, Jo. I remember that there used to be plenty of Vietnamese places in the town where I lived in France, but not sure whether they would have Szechwan pepper.

Costco do their own version (Kirkland) of 5 spice powder, it comes in a big container for a few quid and it is an excellent replacement for the long lost Chinese oxo cubes. RIP Chinese oxo, your are much missed.

Pass, sorry I haven't got the container with me right now so I can't tell you.

It's a good idea to check on that, Fiona, before you use it. Manufacturers are always hiding all kinds of things in amongst the ingredients list. I was blithely using the Sharwoods version myself until I discovered on here that there's often sugar inside.

Thats very true but if you're only using a half teaspoon at a time, can there be much sugar in it?

Maybe not, but it's recommended that you avoid all added sugar, unfortunately. You might get away with it as it's a small amount, but you might want to stop using it if you find that you're stalling.

Just something to be aware of.

Ok, thanks I appreciate the post. I've just realised that you are on the dukan diet ( slow on the uptake, sorry) I'm counting calories so a teaspoon of sugar probably won't make as much difference to me as to you. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

That's okay, Fiona. We have to be careful with banned ingredients on Dukan so we always encourage people on the diet to ready the ingredients list very thoroughly.

Good luck with your calorie counting! :)
