Tinned Grapefruit

Better to Drink your Syns
If I drained all the juice away and dried it on kitchen towel, could I eat tinned grapefruit as free?
It's such a pain to cut a fresh one up into segments!

no unfortunatley tinned fruit is not free in any form, because of the way it is preserved when tinned.

Fruit is only free when in it's raw form.

I always wonder about the syns in tinned stuff - not just fruit but anything that has fluid in it too. How do you weigh it to calculate the syns? eg a 400g can of chickpeas doesn't strictly contain 400g of chickpeas as there's so much fluid in there. I just count it as eg half the amount of chickpeas in the tin being equivalent to whatever the syns for supposedly-200g would be - but then are we supposed to count extra syns if we use some of the liquid too (eg if you used it in hummus? Or if you used the juice in synned tinned fruit as a sauce for a dessert?)

Chickpeas are free on green and extra easy so no need to syn them. I wouldn't have them on red days because they are hugely high in syns.

Yes I know, but like the fruit example - is that the syns for the whole tin including the juice - if so are you actually eating less syns if you dont eat the juice? Or conversely could you use the juice on some other dessert for free?

I actually like to use kidney beans and other pulses as a HEX if I'm on a red day (which isn't often) so am I using more sins if I put the juice from the kidney beans tin as well as the beans themselves?

This is where I am getting confused with the syn value of the tinned grapefruit.
The nutritional info on the can is per 100g, so I drained the fruit, weighed it, and then syned it, as I was not going to eat any of the juice, but was quite surprised at how high it was in syn values, thus started thinking that the nutritional information was for the segments plus the concentrated juice it was in - therefore, the syn value isn't correct.

Tinned fruit has no free food allowance, so the syns are correct regardless of whether you have the juice or not, because it will be the calories on the tin divided by 20.

Yes but if you've got eg a 400g tin of fruit which has, lets say, 10 syns in, you drain it and you're left with say only 300g of fruit.

Just to be safe *I* still count all the 10 syns. (ie count *all* the syns as being in the fruit, not the juice) - But is that actually what you're supposed to do? Or are you actually only having eg 3/4 of the syns in throwing the juice away? (conversely if I *only* use the 100ml of juice as a dessert dressing is it free? Is it 2.5 syns? Or something else?)

if you are only having 300g worth then I would work out the syns as per the 1 syn for every 20 calories.

so for instance if 100g of the tin was 60 calories, multiply by 3 = 180 calories divide by 20 and that makes it 9 syns for 300g, if that makes sense.

the calories for a full tin will be for the contents and juice, so if you are not having the juice or syrup it will be less syns.

remember the 1 syn for every 20 calories only applies to things without a free food allowance.

Ah OK cheers. :) I think Ill just stick to the fresh/frozen stuff :D

Finally got my head around it, and the half can of grapefruit after being drained, worked out at 2 syns, which isn't bad really.
