Goal weight?

Hi Everyone,

I'm a long time lurker and first time poster on this forum! I've been meaning to introduce myself for ages but have only just summonsed up the courage. Firstly I'd like to say what an inspiration some of you are, some of the weightloss on this forum is amazing :)

Secondly, I was looking for some advice. I started my diet about a year ago and have gone from a BMI of 33 to just over a BMI of 25, so I'm sort of getting to the end of my diet, but I was wondering how you guys chose your goal weight? Initially I said I wanted to get to a BMI of 25, and anything else was a bonus, but now I'm nearly there, and while obviously I'm really pleased with the result, I think I could do with losing a bit more, but am not quite sure where to aim!

Any help or advice would be gratefully received!

Hello TTfan:)

Are you still there? To answear your question I have to say there is no answear. The healthy bmi goes from 18 until 25, the best place for you depends on several factor: body type, frame (small, medium or large bone structure), level of activity, etc. Plus the way you feel best on yourself;)

And congratulations for your great work so far, you already did a great job this year, because you went from a 33 bmi to a 25 bmi, that's amazing:)

If you don't mind me ask, wich diet plan did you follow?

xx

Aline says it best.I too said a BMI of 25, but once I got there, I had no question that I wanted to go lower. I'm now aiming for 8 stone - and if I don't like it too much all the way down there then I'll bring myself up to a more comfortable weight.

Thanks both of you - I think I'm going to aim for 23 and see how I feel then. I just don't quite trust my judgement on my own weight, my "fat days" and "thin days" still feel exactly the same as they did a year ago!

Aline, of course you can ask what diet I am on! After yo-yoing for most of my life, I realised about a year ago that unless I learned to eat like a "normal" person I'd always be overweight. So I haven't been following a diet as such, I've been working out 4 times a week and then restricting how much (but not what - within reason) I eat in order to try to shrink my appetite. It's not been the fastest diet but seeing how much I used to think was a normal amount of food for one meal is quite scary to me now, so hopefully it's worked in the long term!

You plan sounds very good:)

And yes, we can't teach our bodies to eat smaller portions. Our stomach is a muscle and the same way is expands with continuous binging it also shrinks when we put less food on it;)

Keep up the good work, the exercise + eating normal portions is the key to long lasting results and vibrant health :)

xx

Hi TTFan

Congratulations on the weight loss, and doing it with a sensible, practical plan! I think, when we start on our journeys, we all imagine once we hit that magic number we will suddenly love our bodies. But that's often not true. It takes time to love that image in the mirror, and that takes more than being able to fit into skinny jeans.

I'm in the same position as you - wondering what BMI to aim for. I'm an hourglass shape and quite active. I don't want to lose my curves, so I think a BMI of around 23 might be one to aim for. I've been down to a BMI of 21.5 before and I looked like a lolly pop head! (head to big for my body.)

Big gratz on the weight loss!

As mentioned BMI is a guide only- i settled for my target weight because i felt it looked right for me personally.

I also had my bodyfat weighed once a fortnight and had a target of 15% bodyfat...once i reached that i knew i was close to my ideal weight.

Finally for me- input from my partner was a big factor.

The weight I feel most healthy at is 150, so that's where I want to be. I've given up worrying about BMI's on their own, because I've read so many different studies saying that they don't actually work for the majority of people.

For me it was BMI combined with how I looked, how I felt, clothes size and feedback from others. It took a while to decide and I changed my goal a couple of times, but I'm there and it's wonderful!!

I was wondering this question not long ago but i found my answer naturally. I got down to a weight where if i lost any more it would start to become saggy, and so I decided to accept that I would have a little fat on my body and stop losing weight and go on to toning/building a little muscle. I think as long as you are a healthy BMI then it doesn't really matter where you fall in that category.
