What Is Glycogen?

Mia

Skinny girl in a fat body
I read so many threads about weight loss / gain with reference made to Glycogen stocks. Can someone enlighten me please lol.

What exactly is Glycogen and why do we need it :wave_cry:

As far as I'm aware glycogen is a store of carbohydrates. That probably explains big first week losses cos when low carbing that store of carbs is depleted. I may be wrong but that's how I've always understood it xx

Oh and we don't necessarily need a big glycogen store. It raises the glucose level in your blood etc so probably good not to have a huge store xx

Glycogen

What is Glycogen?

Glycogen is the body's main source of stored energy. (avaialble to do the things we need to do - like breathe, heart beat, digest food, walk!!) It is made from glucose (derived from from excess carbs in the diet), glycogen is stored primarily in liver and muscle cells. It is stored with water, in the ratio 1 gram of carbohydrates to 3 grams of water.
Where is Glycogen Found in the Body?

Most glycogen is found in the liver (comprising about 10 percent of the liver), with muscles containing a relatively small amount. Liver-glycogen is more readily available for energy and blood glucose maintenance, while muscle-glycogen is used primarily for muscle-energy. A third glycogen location is the brain, where small amounts of glycogen are found in the glial cells. I am sure you needed to know that! But you need it to think!
Glucose to Glycogen

Glycogen is generated from glucose (a simple monosaccharide sugar) by the enzyme glycogen synthase. This process is called glycogenesis. The conversion of glucose to glycogen enables the body to 'park' extra carbohydrate calories, for future use.

Is this what you wanted? Any the wiser? does it matter.

Hope it helps

This explains why its best not to over exercise when in ketosis as the glycogen stores are the easily broken down energy store of the body - when you have no glycogen left and exert yourself it can be quite dangerous as your body can't get enough energy to fuel yourself.
