I have an underactive thyroid since I was 6 years old. I was diagnosed when I went into hospital with a lung infection, and since then have been on medication.
Only thing is, having an underactive thyroid means:

-feeling tired and sleeping a lot
-feeling the cold easily
-dry and/or pale skin
-coarse, thinning hair and brittle nails
-sore muscles, slow movements and weakness
-a hoarse or croaky voice
-a change in facial expression
-depression
-problems with memory and concentration
-weight gain
-constipation
-fertility problems and increased risk of miscarriage
-heavy, irregular or prolonged menstrual periods
-a slow heart rate

Everything in bold, are my symptoms. Since I was a child I've been "plump", tried most diets, but like it states there, never have enough concentration to keep going, never mind having the ENERGY either! Just wanted to know if anyone else is finding it hard with illnesses they have?

:)

Hey there, i find it hard to loose weight with my illness, type 1 diabetes .....

injecting insulin in itself causes weight gain ... so if your eating the wrong types of food ... you can have high blood sugars and needs lots of insulin ...... I have to force myself to exercise every week and ive still managed to gain over a stone in weight .. i dont eat that bad but still gained the weight .... its very frustrating isnt it? Some days i wanna give up, coz i have to carb count everything i eat so i can keep control of my blood sugars ... I bet you find your illness gets you down alot too, esp if you struggle to loose weight. dont worry, your not alone, as one week i can be a stone heavier, then the next week i can be half a stone lighter ... its so hard to keep to a diet with an illness. bless you ... xx

I know how you feel! You're right, it does make you feel really down, but you just need to wake up every day and try again!
I heard a saying on tv last night believe it or not, and I thought it was a good one.

"Today I do. Tomorrow I will."

Your so right, Most people with illnesses tend to be the strong type ... as you gotta keep on going no matter what it takes :) ..

I like that quote  xxxx

I have an underactive thyroid too, and PCOS, and depression, which all in their own ways contribute to a problem with my weight. With the hypothyroidism, I have the same symptoms as you, jeveuxtarevanche. I do find it hard sometimes, but I am managing to lose weight. Just need to try and stay focused and positive, though it's not easy! :grouphugg:

I've never met anyone that had the same as me! I had a blood test yesterday, the doctor thinks my meds ar too weak so hopefully its the cause of everything going wrong recently! I'll do it this time, just have to keep my head in the game:D
Good luck to you!

And you! x

Well, here's a list of my ailments seeing as how you are comiserating with each other -

Diabetes type 2
Underactive Thyroid
Diverticular Disease
Hiatus Hernia
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Ankolysing Spondolitis
Arthritis
Spina Bifida
And lots of other minor things

Yet I manage to lose weight and have kept to a diet since last April 2010.
Anything you really want to do you can put your mind to and succeed.....:)

WOW. You're like a machine woman! You're a serious inspiration!

I've got Psoriasis, Psa, IBS, Raynauds, histamine intolerance/exercised induced anaphylaxis and a bit of SAD. I find it very hard, but its just a case of chipping away and that every 1lb off counts. Even an STS is fine because at least you aren't going backwards.

I have a lot of arthritis in my hands... and some in my knees and hips (although the weight doesn't help that!) I'm on methotrexate, and Etanercept, as well as an antihistamine, all of which has weight gain as a primary symptom.. Sometimes feels like I'm fighting against a constant current of crap with everything :(

SNAP!! I have been type1 diabetic now for 18years, along with it ive battled with diabetic induced anorexia, i now have the blood vessels behind my eyes damaged and im slowly going blind, the blood vessels to my kidneys damaged and it wont be long til they start to fail ..... loosing weight is so hard sometimes esp when taking insulin makes u gain weight .. and of course it causes hypo's so your constantly havin to eat sweets for carbohydrate ..... But we all must say to ourselves that there are so many people worse off than ourselves, i work as a recovery nurse, i recover patients who have the contents of their face and neck removed due to cancer just so they can spend a couple of months longer with their loved ones, they are fed thru a tube in their tummy ...... Seein these ppl makes me so grateful for what i still have .. they are true heroes  x x x x x

I've just been diagnosed with stage 1 Hidradenitis Suppurativa which has meant multiple surgeries, hospital admissions due to cellulitus and Stepsis, all has meant I haven't been to exercise up until recently and all I could do is rest up and wait for the wounds to heal and infections to go.

I suffer from anxiety/panic attacks/depression. I have mild IBS comparatively to some (my OH for instance)

I have suffered from eczema and asthma from Childhood and have various allergies (but only to fennel food wise)

I've noticed that my asthma and eczema is better now I've dropped a stone and a bit. I just find it hard to get motivated when I'm recovering from surgery or my depression kicks in :S
