Quick question

Sorry just a quick question - My mum had pointed out to me in the past that I have a few symptoms of PCOS. I used to have very irregular periods a few years ago before I started on the pill (I'd be on for at least 2 weeks at a time then nothing for months) and I've always had bad acne. I thought i'd grow out of it but I'm almost 21 and it's not getting any better. I also have a lot of excess hair on my face (it's fair hair thankfully) and hairy arms and belly and of course the excess weight. Are there any other symptoms I should look out for? I don't know wether to go and talk to my doctor. Is it something I should be worried about?

Thanks :)

Hey Felix,

One of the big problems with PCOS is that it's a syndrome which means that there's no one definitive thing that says "hey up there, this is PCOS" - some people can have some aspects of it that just don't show up for others. So for me, I get no periods and my ovaries show up on an ultra sound scan as having cysts on them, obviously I have issues with my weight and I have some body hair problems (sadly for me, it's dark!) but my skin is near perfect and my hormonal tests come back normal too. Basically if a doctor sees you have these issues and thinks they're not just a normal part of life and are above and beyond what they deem to be "normal" you have PCOS. Some women with diagnosed PCOS don't even have cysts on their ovaries!

The other problem with PCOS is that no one really knows what exactly causes it. Weight is linked to it yes, but then again there seems to be some debate...as loosing weight has shown to drastically improve the symptoms of PCOS in many cases, some say that weight causes it, yet the difficulties many women with PCOS have in loosing weight makes many think weight is a result of having it. There are many who shrug and say well, one exaccerbates the other.

Being that there is no real definitive cause per se, there is no treatment. The various symptoms are managed. Those with irregular periods are put on the pill, and there are a couple of varieties which can also tackle acne and excess hair (though ironically perhaps those particular varieties of the pill aren't supposed to be used in overweight patients as their high oestrogen levels put you at higher risk of blood clots) and those with fertility problems are encouraged to lose weight and offered fertility treatment.

So it's up to you...when I was first diagnosed it didn't make any difference at all as I was 15. I couldn't take the pill because of a family hsitory of blood clots and the fact that I get focal migraines which are linked to strokes (as well as being overweight). I went back to my doctor recently to ask for help concieving, saying I had PCOS. She shrugged and told me to lose weight then come back if I was still having problems (NHS won't give fertility treatment to women over a certain BMI)

If you want the reassurance, I would go to the doctor, but really, there's not an awful lot that they can do and if you're already trying to manage your weight there's not an awful lot else to worry about :)

Thank you for the reply, I really appreciate it! I will have a chat with my doctor the next time I go for the pill and see what she says. Thanks again :)
