Meetings

Does anyone find there meetings useful, after attending the weekly meeting i very rarely feel motivated or feel like i have actually learnt anything.

Personally I wasn't a huge fan of the meetings which is why I've gone solo this time around. I just didn't like the idea of having to share in front of everyone if you didn't get the result you'd expected - I'd much rather sit and reflect on it in my own time thank you very much. I used to do WW and liked their meetings format a bit better, in that you didn't have to share if you didn't want to and there was a meeting topic to talk about. Like one week it would be about dealing with emotional overeating or like at holidays etc it would be how to deal with those.

It all depends on the leader though as well. My WW leader was fab, but then she left and I never found another leader quite like her, in WW or SW:cry:.

I prefered the ww meetings too but unfortunatly the diet didnt work for me. I just dont see how sitting there after being at work all day listening to how people have done is motivational or helpful.

This is exactly how I felt, especially when the people there haven't stuck to it and are coming up with all the 'excuses'. If you find the thought of going to a meeting to be weighed useful and motivating, could you look to try another class? Or maybe just weigh in here? I do a diary to help motivate me.

I think it depends on the meeting...my meeting at the minute is quite motivational. There are quite a few people though who see it as a coffee morning and are quite negative...but that's countered by our consultant who's fab. Persoanlly I know I can't do it by myself I need to physically go to the meeting, weigh in and reflect :). Plus if I have a bad week it kind of draws a line under it xxx

Mmm, well i liked the meetings when i first joined in nov because they were a smaller group and we had time to talk about other thing apert from everyones progress, but now it takes a full hr to get around everyone! I dont mean to be rude but there is alway's one who waffles on about c**p for about 20 mins arrrrr drives me mad! So i only stay to about 1 meeting a month now and thats enough!! Still love sw but i do thing the ww meetings were better chat wise!!

I could have written that!!!
X has lost x pound clap clap clap, how did you get on, waffle waffle waffle, well done clap clap clap ad infinitum *yawn

I think the meetings are fantastic. Our consultant is excellent shes really motivational and I like hearing how the other group members have done and how they;ve done it. Thing is if you dont like the meetings. Your best to go online or just get the books on the first meating and then dont go back

I haven't had much experience of SW meetings as I'm only still in my second week.. However, I relate to what you guys are saying generally. It's a really big group and last week was just 'so and so lost this' 'you lost that' etc, was expecting more tips and advice! That said, the consultant is fab very happy to help with advice if needed, I wonder if they have to phsically go through everyone's losses? WW was different as you said Funky Munky, definitely more helpful for tips and advice, SW could learn a bit from the WW meetings - BUT sw is a miiiiles better diet IMO! :) xxx

I don't particularly like the meetings and rarely stay these days but I need to pay the money to be weighed each week, I couldnt do that from home and stay motivated, as lovely and helpful as everyone here is, I need the official scales!!

i have stayed to meetings from the begining, but in a few weeks i'm only going to be able to go and weigh in for 6 weeks as my hubby will be away and i will have my son with me, and hes only 3, its not fair to keep him cooped up in the room for an hour and half.
i do like the meeting however i don't feel i actually gain much from it, in fact i think since i have found this website i find more useful information and motivational posts....and also i've not seen anyone gloat on here that they ate x amount takeaways and STILL lost 20 lb at their wi....ok slight exageration but you get my drift. it just slightly makes me grit my teeth when its the same week after week lol.
soooo yes, 90% of the time i do like to stay but no on the front of gaining much useful information. it just helps me prep for the coming week in my mindset :)

Yes, the consultants have to go around everyone in group (we all pay for the group - so how could you leave anyone out?).

If you don't find your group motivational - DON'T LEAVE - STAY AND IMPROVE YOUR GROUP!!!!

If you want advice about eating out - ASK!!
If you want advice about emotional eating - ASK!!

When it comes around to your turn - Ask for the group's advice. If someone else says 'I ate XXX and I've still lost' - ask them how they did it - maybe they were really good the rest of the week? Had they been eating a lot of superspeed food? Drinking a lot of water?

I raise lots of topics that I've found on here... I see it as bringing a little bit of Minimins magic to the rest of Slimming Worldom!!

Your group CAN BE DIFFERENT!!!! Your group CAN BE BETTER!!!! Your group CAN ONLY BE AS GOOD AT THE PEOPLE WHO ATTEND.

I had the same experience with my first group, only about 4 people stayed they were mainly interested in how much vodka they can drink if they save their syns up, absolutely no interest for me, always left feeling down and not motivated.

had to go to a different group one week and what a difference, the leader was great, the group was great, yeah she still does the going round the room thing, but gives loads of info and the advice and tips from the rest of the gorup are fab as well.

last week after getting on the scales I had put on a half a pound again, almost didn't stay to group but had a word with myself and stayed and I'm glad I did, came away feeling really motivated and ready to start again.

My advice is shop around for a new group which can support you how you need to be supported.

Good luck

Really well said lonestitcher.
I suppose I never thought of it that way! Will definitely bear that in mind in future if I have any burning questions!
I know that SW is not WW and so didn't expect the meeting to be the same, it is just a change when you are used to something different. I am still getting used to the SW way of eating, and so I intend to stay for my meetings just to hear other people's way of doing things. I have no problem with my consultant discussing our individual losses, infact I find it spurs me on - but I know people who do. This is the reason my sister doesn't stay for her meetings. Not because she isn't following the plan and/or losing, she is just quite a private person and would prefer not to discuss it infront of group.

The consultants each week get given a topic to discuss. As mentioned it could be tips to manage the holidays, emotional overeating, bbq recipes... anything appropriate to the time of year etc! The meeting is mostly based on that topic, and people share their tips and ideas. I always found it very informative and inspiring, shame the diet was pants for me! Obviously you find out what your weight is, but it's generally just discussed at the scales, and will be brought up in the meeting if you've had a loss which takes you to a milestone eg 10%, half stone, stone etc xxx

That sounds great! I really like that type of meeting where you gain lots of info. Will take your advice though and speak up if I have questions etc. I realise I can't just write off the meetings as being all the same as I've only been to two :s Think our consultant was bombarded last week, the meeting was so rammed and obviously it takes a while to get around everyone! I am really looking forward to Tuesday though to weigh in again :) hopefully the hard work will show ....! xxxxx

Well said! In my opinion, you get out of group what you are willing to put in.

Suggest ideas for discussions, taster sessions, quizzes etc.

If you're struggling with something then ask advice from other members.

If you tried a new recipe, found a great low syn product, or heard that something is on special offer ...tell people about it!

Volunteer to organise social events yourself.

Learning is best when it is two way and interactive. Remember your classes at school, which were best? Probably not the teacher who stood at the front and talked at you for an hour.

And for those people who do not like talking about their losses then you don't have to. A quick word in the consultant's ear and she will pass you by.
