Cruise PP I made icecream, I made icecream!!!!!!!!

It took 15 minutes and I am eating it RIGHT now.

Robert Dyas has a sale on "nuo" kirchen gadgets, and the icecream maker was only £14.99

So when I got home today I got the bowl out, started it up and tipped in about half a pot of zero-greek yogurt, and a pot of mullerlight toffee.

15 minutes later - a bowl full of tangy, creamy, cold, fluffy ice-cream!

I am ridiculously excited - I still have some in the freezer - I'm tempted to take it to bed with me, and eat it while watching a movie!

I have a simple hand-cranked ice cream maker I bought in my student days - still works! I used to make super strawberry yoghurt ice cream (with real strawberries), I guess I can revive that habit now! We also have a ZOKU instant ice lolly maker, the kids love it! I just pour in some skimmed milk (full fat for them), sweetened and vanilla for me, flavoured with choc or strawberry Nesquick (I know I know...) for them. Hey presto - three happy people. Shame it permanently takes up space in the freezer now...
Zoku Quick Pop
And no, I have not tried any of the more adventurous 'recipes' depicted on the web site. Tried embedding banana slices once but it's quite tricky and ended in (nevertheless edible) 'disaster'...

My dad did exactly the same thing when he was a student in the 50s! - he didn't even have a fridge in his bedsit, but he found an icecream churn in a junk shop, bought ice from wherever people used to buy ice from, and made icecream with whatever fruit he could get cheap when the market closed.

Atropos....where did u get the ice cream maker from. googled NUO kitchen gadgets (in the uk) , but nothing.
maybe you are not in the UK?

I bought mine in Robert Dyas, the UK hardware chain.

At the moment I can see icecream makers on Amazon for around £25-30, so the £15 might have been a one off.

I've used mine almost every day since I bought it - lemon, toffee, rhubarb, rose, peppermint, coffee, even chocolate (tsp of fat-free cocoa) once

Hi Atropros, I know this is an old thread but I found it by googling. Very surprised to see a Dukan minimins post by googling for ice cream makers!

I am wanting to buy one after I buy a yogurt maker tomorrow. I don't want to spend a lot of money and noticed the one in Robert Dyas. Can you tell me if you need to freeze the bowl of this maker prior to using it? I would prefer to buy one where this isn't necessary. Would you still recommend this ice cream maker?

Thanks in advance for any advice. :)

Yes - you need to freeze the bowl.

As far as I am aware there is no "self-freeze" maker available under £150.00

Thank you.

After posting this, I looked into it further, didn't realise the ones that didn't need freezing before hand were so expensive. Definitely not worth it in my case.

Think I will get the Robert Dyas one since you like it so much, must work well with 0 fat yogurt. :) Thanks again.

Thank you, Atropos, I ordered one of these a few days ago. I adore frozen yogurt and have scouted all local shops trying to find nonfat, sugar free, low carb to no avail! Bought frozen yogurt is what de-railed me on my first Dukan go. I thought it was allowed and had one every day for lunch. Won't over do this, well, maybe I will! Since it's allowed and I eat a lot of yogurt.

It arrived yesterday and is freezing for it's first 24hours. It's smaller than I envisioned and so easily fits in my freezer. Read that sugar is necessary to give ice cream the proper crystal structure, so probably true for yogurt. Not expecting the creaminess of soft serve so excited to see what the plain nf yogurt texture will be. Might try making a nf milk, egg custard and combining with the yogurt. Also read regular nf yogurt is better than Greek/cheese yogurt.

Thank you Joydriven, I was wondering about how it would be with 0% yogurt, particularly Greek yogurt, that is extremely helpful information.

I still haven't got around to getting it, I am still getting to grips with my yogurt maker! I am beginning to think it just isn't worth it.

But I still want to make ice cream so will be very interested in what your experience will be. It is so nice to have people on the forum that will share.:)

When you mention it says it works better with sugar because it is granulated, I wonder if using a little xylitol would help. It is granulated and in fact the granules are larger than sugar.

Ok, so i'm super pleased with my first batch! All I had was 0% Greek yogurt. I used the whole quart. Mixed some vanilla extract with about 2 tablespoons 0% cream cheese ( US book says this is unlimited not tolerated), about 1 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch (tolerated and 6 servings/6 teaspoons), stevia and mixed with the yogurt.

Flavored with espresso powder, cinnamon.

The texture is perfect! Just as good as the soft serve type. Not sure yet what will happen to the remainder in the freezer. The texture may change as it freezes hard, but so far it's wonderful! I need to work on flavor. Next time i'll play up the sour with lemon instead of trying to cover it. Maybe raspberry/lemon, lots of options.

So, Greek and nf works. I don't have xylitol to try and will especially if after a hard freeze it changes texture.
