A Guy Says Hi!

Hi my name is David hence the imaginably titled username...

I'm 28 years old, & thoroughly unhappy with my heavy situation.

I've always been a big lad, the type where people always say "you should play rugby" or "you would make a fierce bouncer"well actually no I hate rugby and i don't like confrontation so I kind of think you are taking the piss, so there.

I've been out of work for a long while now but I start a new job on Monday for a chartered surveyors company woo hoo!.

My weight has spiralled rather badly over the last 3 years since a break up of my last relationship and through being unemployed. Lack of self worth, comfort eating for that 10 or 20 mins of satisfaction then a night time of hating oneself, I've got the T-shirt.

I have very poor will power, which makes temptation and the overall ease at which one can over eat absolute crap a trap i constantly fall into.

I have now joined a Gym and will begin going after work at the end of the month once i receive my first pay packet. I will also adjust my diet accordingly.

I want to go out, wear the clothes i've always dreamed of, be physically attractive to women (im not terribly looking though i might add :p) surely that should be inspiration enough, but my God its gonna be a tough journey.

Im currently 20 odd stone (morbidly obese I assume), the reason I've joined the forum is to find some kindred spirits to assist me on the long road and gain strength from others struggles to success

Thanks

Hi David, Welcome to the forum.
So what diet regime are you about to take on?
There are lots of different ones as you will see if you scan the dropdown subjects.
Hope you will start your own diary as well so that we know where to find you and read about your progress, plus give you the support and encouragement along the way.

Take care and all the best in your endeavour...:)

Hi there EMMALINE,

I have no clue what diet im going to undertake, my mates mother is a manager at one of the franchises of the Gym ive joined & i believe i have a consultation with a personal trainer. Don't know whether they will talk to me about nutritional advice.

Maybe joining a SW OR WW would be a good option along side my Gym work.

I need to cut out the rubbish, crisps, fizzy red bull style drinks, take aways, and incorporate more greens and what not into my regular diet.

I kinda know what to do, its just doing it that will be hard!!:sigh:

Will do on the diary subject too.

That sounds great David, gym should be a good start and I do beleive that a personal trainer should be able to give you some advice as well.
Can I suggest to you that when you get to what I call a "blip" don't allow it to throw you! We all have them and it's a fact of life that we can't do things perfectly so don't berate yourself just try to relax, take a deep breath and get back to a healthy eating prog a.s.a.p.
Get to it and let us know how you are getting on...:)

I've just had enough really of accepting that what i have is all that it has to be... if that makes sense lol

I have the ability to change things just a case of going out there and doing it!

Morning David, and welcome to minimins xx.

Your introduction was so interesting, and honest too. I should think you struck a chord with many of the users of this site, so you definately won't be alone on here and you should get plenty of support xx.

Well done on taking the decision to make changes to your life. And how wonderful about your new job too...maybe that's what kick started your motivation to get healthy again. It's so easy to lose feelings of self worth and confidence when we're not working, and of course the lack of money can make it hard to eat healthily, and to socialize. So congratulations on securing your new job too...no mean feat in this day and age!

There are dozens of successful (and not so successful) diets to be found, so it might be an idea to have a good nose through all the forums, don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, and see if anything takes your fancy.

I can only really speak for ww and sw, both of which have worked well for me in the past. But then I put my weight back on again when an emotional crisis came along such as losing family members. I need to learn how to cope without turning to food. I'm hoping to do that now with sw...my father is terminally ill with cancer but so far I am coping well and have lost 2 stones in 12 weeks. I'm very proud of that as normally in this situation I wud be buried in comfort food and wine, and totally out of control. If I can stay strong thru this then I think I will crack this viscous circle.

I really love sw, I'm never hungry and its easy to follow. Infact its more of a healthy eating plan than a diet. I did lose a lot of weight with ww a few yrs ago, but tbh I did feel rather hungry, but then again in fairness they have brought a new plan out since then so it could be quite different now. One thing I would say is if you feel up to it, I would join a group locally so u can get plenty of good advice and support, and of course an accurate wi every week. There's loads of help to be had here, but personally I need the push of a weekly meeting to keep me motivated. They are all very friendly and everyones in the same boat so there's no need to be nervous.

Well, don't quite know how I managed to write all this...War and Peace springs to mind lol! Sorry for rambling on!
Please let us all know what u decide, and how yr getting on. Set up a diary on here and we can all swap tips and ideas.
Very best wishes for the future hunni, and good luck with the new job xx

Dawn.

Hi Dawn, thanks for you're kind reply.

I'm a sort of guy that needs a plan and a routine so I have some reference to fall back on which will enable to me to stick to it. So SW or WW plan may be ideal. A change in diet supplemented with exercise should be the way forward.

Its going to be tough but I need to change, for my health and my sanity.

I'm very sorry to hear of your fathers illness, I hope you have a strong family and friends network to help you through this difficult time.

You could always try good old counting calories and marking your exercise? there are a lot of calorie counting sites out there with most foods on, I use myfitnesspal and it's good. Good luck with the gym, the hardest part is the signing up you've got nothing to lose but the weight now :0) x

Hi David,

Welcome, I only joined yesterday so new to this as well. I am very unhappy as well. Im 16st 5lb and aged 32 so heavy for girl my age. I hate my body. I am trying SW and have lost 9lb so far. We should both feel so proud for taking the step and making the changes needed. Keep me updated and keep on this site for motivation, everyone seems lovely and they talk great sense.

H :)

Thanks everyone, its a difficult step, but im going in the right direction. Lots of temptations out there
but I need to improve my will power. A better me should be inspiration enough

Hi David,

I think you will be ok. New start on Monday to look forward to...exciting new job/new healthy eating plan/ new lifestyle regime...it's all so positive for you at the moment!
I'm sure you will succeed hunni xx

P.S. Thanks for your kind comments about Dad...I am lucky to have a very supportive hubby and 3 lovely children...and I have had a great deal of help and advice from members on here too. They really are a great bunch, and aren't only there for dieting advice but for all sorts of other problems xx

Hi David,

You've already taken the 1st step to changing your life and that's by making the decision to lose weight.

I'm doing SW myself as I love the flexibilty the plan offers as well as the types of food you can eat. It doesn't feel like a diet to be honest.

Congratulations on the new job also. With all these changes you're starting to make you'll have your confidence back and feel like a new man in no time!

Good luck on your journey, if you need any help there is plenty in abundance on here. The support is second to none x

I cant say with any authority to whats the best diet to lose weight as the only thing Ive tried is SW after I piled the weight on during a period of inactivity due to injury and unemployment, What I will say is that my weight losses while at SW have been steady and Ive never felt like Ive been on a diet. Its a bit daunting at first attending a slimming class thats predominantly female members, but once you get over this its not such a bad thing.

Good luck, stay focused on your goals, Your dreams WILL be reality

Good luck with the gym and diet mate!
Saw you were the newest guy and thought I'd say hello!
Your post made me smile coz i am the guy you described.... ex rugby player and ex bouncer.
Let us know what diet you go for?

Hi David, your first post was really honest and I enjoyed reading it... It's nice to see new guys joining up too.

You'll see soon you've made a really good decision for your health - best of luck and I'll follow how you've been doing!

Hi David, nice to meet you. I look forward to talking to you on here at some point! Good luck with your journey :)
I just wanted to say about the gym, ask your GP for a referral to your local gym (probably only local authority/council though), it wont cost you anything then! My GP referred me due to my BP being high and I dont pay. They do it in my area (Leicestershire) not sure about other places but worth an ask!
All the best, Libby x

Yes they do it in Wales as well if you have a medical requirement such as BP but a friend of mine actually got referred to a gym for telling her GP her weight was making her depressed. Maybe I should try that although I'd need to change doctors first! Mine would laugh me out of the sugery!

Hey David,

I know exactly how you feel. I lived in Birmingham until last year and Birmingham Council actually have a scheme thing where you can get free gym use and stuff. So if I were you I'd go to see your doctor, I got 10 free sessions to either Weight Watchers or Rosemary Coneley (my choice) and free gym membership. I know you're working but could save you some cash!

Good luck and keep us posted :)

Caroline
