Hobbies

This might sound ridiculous, but I need a hobby!

I spent the majority of my life with depression & barely leaving my bed (which is a good indication of why I gained weight!). I class myself as recovered now, but I'm having a hard time 'finding' myself. I think some hobbies might help. I've got a full time job now, which is something I never thought I'd be able to have!

I've thought of a couple of ideas, I'm hoping to have something fairly active & something that I can do in the home..
So far I have card making/scrapbooking for in the home & possibly learning to ride a horse for outside.. I'll have to lose some weight before I can do that properly though (& save some pennies!)

I cycle to & from work so I don't really want to be doing that & I walk my dog every day. Other than that, I spend most of my time either watching TV or at my computer & I'd really like to break those habits. Plus it'd be nice to have something to talk to people about & meet new people.

What do you all for for hobbies? Do you have any suggestions? x

What about photography? You don't have to have an expensive camera. And most towns have camera clubs that you can join to meet people.

Just getting out and about and looking at things from the point of view of taking an interesting photograph can take you out of yourself and get you looking at things differently.

What about learning a language?

I love glass-painting and often just sit and do this at the kitchen table of an evening - I buy cheap glasses and paint them up, it started a few years ago when I did glasses for friends getting married and now I do them for fun and if someone wants them! Glass paint is relatively cheap and glasses are inexpensive - in October I painted 26 pint glasses for my brother to take away on deployment with him, one for each Officer in the Mess!!

I've also started patchworking, but I'm not very good at it yet! xxx

As you have experienced depression yourself, have you considered doing something voluntarily? There is a lot on offer and charities , like MIND, are crying out for volunteers.

With summer coming, how about a running club. They need loads of newbies, look after beginners (group them together) and it would get your serotonin up and your weight down. Or a walking club if that's too daunting. They usually lay on coaches to get you to a nice place to start from.

100% behind this one. It might seem a strange thing to say, but I never feel as if I am on my own when I have my camera with me.

It gives you a whole new perspective on places, people and things and does not cost a fortune .

A language, yes , great idea and the glass painting sounds fun and can be done at home and just think you would never be short of birthday and Christmas presents.

Mine are cooking, the horses, great and wonderful creatures and there is of course the saying " The outside of the horse is good for the inside of the soul". Photography, antiques. Walking with my doggies.

I volunteer at a local RSPCA shop and I love it, I just wish I could get a job doing this. There are many charity shops that need help. Ive suffered with depression in the past and working in the shop takes your mind off your own problems and keeps you busy.:D

What about joining a local Zumba class. It's a really good way to make friends, exercise and have a laugh. I'm addicted!

i want to start looking after horses again. i did it from the age of 13 through to 25 and i do miss it.

How about watching a sport? i cannot do any unfirtunatly because of my illness but i love watching Ice Hockey ( season finished now til end august) and follow the BTCC (British Touring Car Championships) You meet some wonderful friends at these events.. i have friends al over the country who are as mad as me!

I also trace my family tree which i've done since 1988 it can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be.

Postcrossing a world wide postcard sending website thats safe..it explains all about it in the link. then you could scrapbook the postcards you receive too

photography ( as already mentioned) i take my camera everywhere with me as you never know what you'll see when out and about.

do you like dogs? if so how about volunteering to walk the homeless woofers? they'd love it and you'd get the pleasure of helping them too.

blimey i'm on one on this thread haha sorry

I do alot of papercrafting, so card making, scrapbooking etc I run a monthly group too, so we all take our stuff in and sit and natter, drink tea and giggle whilst swapping ideas etc. Last month I helped the Pastors wife make 50 invitations to the Pastors induction/ordination.

For outside why not try nordic walking? Get together with a bunch of people with Nordic walking poles.

If you like horses why not volunteer to help at the stables, maybe in return for 1/2 hour free riding?

One really nice thing is combining photography and film making. If you like taking photos, and have a creative flair you can make some really cool videos with free software like Microsoft FilmMaker etc.

What about bell ringing? There's usually a local group. Not that Ive ever done it, but know people who do it and have great fun, and always fancied it. It must be good for toning your arms too.

I make bathbombs and soaps, and I also do big jigsaws, usually a thousand pieces or more, Victoria Francis print ones if I can get hold of one, I find both hobbies relaxing and keep me from nibbling on naughty stuff... In fact today the pub is shut, and I am going to put a mix on the go for a bathbomb I call Tart from Hell, smells like cherry bakewell, by the time I have sniffed the cherry and almond oil, I no longer crave the actual thing!...

One of the best things I did in the last year was join my local ramblers group! - this enabled me to get away from the computer and into the great outdoors - all weathers - rain or shine!

Plenty of exercise and a whole new circle of friends who also enjoy life.

I am a seriel hobbyist, but the rambling club has been my most inspired move.
