Japanese Food - what to have

Hello ladies and gents!

I'm going for Japanese tonight and I'm a bit confused as to what would be the best choice to make.

I've read a mixture of things on sushi - some sites telling me that sushi rice is high GI, others telling me that sushi rice isn't, and others telling me that sushi overall is low gi because of its combination with the rice vinegar and fish. Does anybody know which is correct? :/

Failing that, I've also read that soba noodles are low GI, so that could also be a possibility (but I'm a bit concerned about portion sizes - so I would rather go for the sushi I think!).

Does anybody have any more information about Japanese eating and low GI that they can share with me so I can make some good choices? I don't want to just have sashimi! I know that Miso, rice based dishes (like katsu curry), and most noodles are a no-no. Thanks!

Hi Fattack
How did you get on with your meal? I go often for Japanese food and usually stick to the noodle soups - I only eat half the noodles in it. And if I am honest, the bowl is so big I also end up leaving a lot of broth also but I am always full.

For a starter I often have teriyaki grilled veg skewers that they offer and if I do have sushi (kappa maki), it is the starter size and the restaurant I go to gives you three small pieces for the starter so it isn't a huge portion.

If I have a noodle or rice based dish, I only eat half the rice or noodles as well and stick to the grilled meat options and little or no sauce. I do love the katsu curry though and sometimes have it as a treat but not every time I go.

I was reading that Miso soup is ok or green light if you will (it was in Rick Gallop's GI diet pocket guide) but I suppose everything in moderation :)

I had mostly just nigiri, along with one plate of maki in the end - I read that overall it's "medium" GI because of the fish and the vinegar (still reading conflicting things about the rice though!) - I still lost weight so it didn't do too much damage, plus I also read that if you have one meal that isn't "low" GI it's not the end of the world if you eat low GI during the rest of the day, so I had my nigiri and loved it!

I loooove Katsu Curry too, but managed to resist it this time around!

So glad you enjoyed your meal. I'd agree with you about GL balancing. I've read that this is why it's difficult to give accurate values for foods. Their GL value depends on what it is served with, how it is cooked and how much processing is involved in the ingredients.
I love the C.R.A.P in your signature. If we all applied that we would be super healthy. I'll have to adopt it as my own motto. I might fail on the caffeine front. I love my coffee.
Have a great week.

Well done on your choices and your loss Fattack! I'm going for Japanese on Friday, really looking forward to it, still deciding on what to have :)

Thanks all! I do try to adhere to the no CRAP principle but I don't always manage it myself - I try to view them more as treats these days - giving up my pepsi max / coffee was VERY difficult!!
