L: chicken breast with steamed carrots and green beans and spoonful homemade ratatouille
1 low calorie yoghurt

Snack: 1 apple

D: 6oz medium grilled steak with salad

1/2 peach, 1/2 apricot (shared with OH!)

1,200 cals ish...

And you?

Breakfast = 2 weetabix with 3oz strawberries

Tea = It would have been M&S Breaded Fish Protions with a small jacket pot and broccoli, however my oven exploaded last night so now i'm having to re-think dinner! D'oh!

Morning Joanne!

Food looking good :) Hope you don't mind me sharing some thoughts though.

You're having lots of low cal stuff there. Gets more food in there doesn't it  Of course, I can't see how much ratatouille you have, or whether you added a fair amount of oil, or how much chicken, what sort of salad etc but on first glance it looks like you might be erring on the side of caution?

In my head, that adds up to about 900-950 cals....I haven't included milk though. Just thought if you are guessing your cals, or it really does add up to 1200.

Another thing is that you are low carbing. Is this intentional? That's fine if it is. Protein will keep you going longer, but there will be a reduction in your glycogen that will replace very quickly once you eat some carbs, causing a sudden weight gain (though it won't be fat...just bringing things back up to normal).

Hope you don't mind me sharing these thoughts. Sure you know what you're doing and don't want to knock you off course and all that.

Karion - I am really grateful for your thoughts. You're right that I am erring on the side of caution (not least because the steak wasn't properly defrosted this morning so I don't know what it weighs so am guestimating!).

I made the ratatouille without oil. Chicken is 5oz. It's true that I am keeping things low carb (except veggies, salad and fruit) this week, and I probably mentioned this in another thread so you wouldn't have seen it, but I ate sooooo many white carbs at the weekend that I wanted to "detox" off them! I gained 21 pounds in 17 days, I calculated earlier this morning, and have already lost 8.5lbs in 3 days.

From Saturday, I shall go back to alternating cereal and protein breakfasts, and having 1,400 calorie days every other... just that psychologically, to stop the bingeing, I felt I had to see a fast loss.

Where I will need your help Karion is with reintroducing carbs... I always have trouble with that. My homemade muesli is good for breakfast, but I'll need to introduce other things too (as always eat root veg, and plenty of fruit) s l o w l y once I near target again.

I'm not great at this calorie counting lark. Am I far out with this:

½ grapefruit (50)
small boiled egg (70)
1 yogurt (55)
= (175)

5oz chicken (225)
+ 3 x root veg, plus 2 spoonfuls ratatouille (100)
1 yog (55)
Snack later 1 apple (70)
= 450

6oz steak (300)
+ salad (50)
peach (70)

= (420)
then I rounded up to include milk in 2 x cuppas!

I'm THRILLED to have your input Karion cos I'm new to this and am not sure how to get the nutrition side of things better balanced from next Monday. Any ideas would be much welcomed!

Well it was the glass panel on the inside of the oven door. My Dad opened the oven door and glass just exploaded showering the entire kitchen with little shards of glass! It's not even a old oven! God knows when we'll get a replacement.

Oh no :( Fancy that happening:eek: I survived 7 years without a cooker or a hob. I remember moaning that "I just want to boil an egg!!!" Then it was suggested that I boiled it in the kettle

We do get used to things though and I can't imagine having to survive without my cooker now. Hopefully you have a microwave?

Glad you took it in the spirit it was intended :)

Wow. Quick on, quick off

Fair enough.

No, not all. Doing fab. Will analyse and be really picky :D :D Not that you need to be. Rounding up is fine, but just to explain why I thought you may have over guestimated.
½ grapefruit (50)
Well..33 in my head :) Perhaps not have 1/2 grapefruit a day, what with the 'scare' 1/2 every other day, or 1/4 a day seems to be recommended.
small boiled egg (70)
1 yogurt (55)
Yep
5oz chicken (225)
+ 3 x root veg, plus 2 spoonfuls ratatouille (100)
Yep. I hadn't allowed for the root veg.
1 yog (55)
Snack later 1 apple (70)
Yep

6oz steak (300)
Spot on. Less if you cut the fat off. Doesn't taste as nice though and you have enough cals.
+ salad (50)
peach (70)
1/2 peach:p = approx 20, 1/2 apricot about 10.

Just to show how my brain worked :D

Ahhh, you'll be just fine. I'll add thoughts which you can take or leave :)

(Great quoting skills there Karion) :D

I'm very impressed at your quoting skills, and thanks so much for your input, Karion.

I won't attempt to quote but could you tell me about the "grapefruit scare"? I live in France these days and must have missed that. I find the bitterness of a grapefruit helps quell my sweet tooth (remember you're talking to the girl who ate FOUR croissants for breakfast just four days ago!).

I am delighted to find that peaches are less fattening than I guessed! I admit to have never ever weighed a piece of fruit in my life (life is too short for that!), but I presumed it'd equate to an apple and obviously not! Maybe I'll have whole fruits then!

That exploding oven sounds frightening indeed. Hope you have a microwave. Do your hob rings work? Two weeks ago, we had a six hour powercut in the country. Fortunately the stove there is gas hob, electric oven. Silly me put the kettle on AND put toast in the toaster! Most annoying ot have one's toast habit on holiday broken by a powercut! I stood by it waiting for it to toast too!

Only 4? Wow. :D They are rather nice though, could probably beat you in the croissant eating comp;)

The grapefruit scare is just a new bit of research and as such, still very fresh in my memory. It will probably be debunked next week

Evidently grapefruit inhibits a molecule which in theory raises the level of oestrogen in your blood.

This can lead to a higher chance of getting breast cancer.

I think that if I'm eating something purely for it's health benefits (rather than personal pref), then I might give it a 2nd thought on hearing the 'latest research'. Not necessarily drop it....just rethink. If I liked it and it helped curb my sweet tooth, I'd probably still carry on having it. Rebel like that and anyway, it's only the first findings.

Hi everybody,

Sarah - sounds scary, your oven exploding and dangerous, bits of glass everywhere.

Joanne - 8.5lbs in three days - fabulous, what a great start.

Calories so far today

breakfast - WW yogurt 50 cals

lunch - toast and pate 290 cals( I know I have had this for the last three days, but one low cal portion just splits into 4 and nobody else likes pate, so guess what is for lunch tomorrow:D)

Snack - sugar free jelly 10 cals

Total so far 350, but I am going to my Mum's for dinner, so thought I had better allow some cals
