Hi everyone
I am under my doctor for health reasons and when she suggested xenacol as an aid to weight loss I thought I would give it a try.
For those of you who have tried it before you will know that its all based around fat absorbtion and so eating a low fat diet is a must!

Just wanted to ask peoples comments about it and if they have tried it did/didnt it work. Did you have any side effects, if so what were they?
I am suffering really badly with wind. Also I had a fab weight loss the first week 5kg but then the second week nothing. Although I must confess I strayed a little off the path (head hung in shame):( but only once so I would have thought I would have lost something, but hey at least I maintained.

As well as the xenacol I am also taking water tablets. So what the heck I'll be on the loo for one reason or another ... lol ....

My doctor gave me Xenical but they didnt work at all. He actually said the reason they didnt work was because I was on a low fat diet, he said they really only work if youre on a higher fat diet. Being on a LF Diet doesnt work with them so well because youre already absorbing so little fat. So really a low fat diet seems to defeat the purpose of them really.

I know some people have horrible side effects on them, but again I think thats if youre eating more fat.

I was on them for about 4 months and lost about 20lbs. But the weight loss really dropped to almost nothing, because I was on a really low fat diet. Most horrible side effect was being a bit 'leaky' after having an ice cream- very unpleasant- sorry for the detial but you did ask! I was also very windy on them too. I stopped them when it became clear they were not working any more- even thugh I was still 5 stones overweight! I'm not a believer in low fat diets for this very reason.

Still, so long as they work for you, keep on going with them, because for some people they are ideal.

Good luck- don't have any ice cream!

I wad on Xenical for a while a lost a bit of weight (cant remember how much coz it was ages ago, I was actually the first person my Doctor prescribed them to). The side effects are terrible. They are quite embarassing and I couldn't even say on a public board, but I suppose it deters you from eating fat. The thing is is that once you recognise you have the side effects after eating something with a lot of fat, you just miss your tablet! You one need to take a tablet with a meal with fat in it, say, if you are having a salad you don't need a tablet coz there is no fat to soak up. It is a deterrent but I really would not recommend them.

I am now under a consultant for a bowel probelm and to be totally honest, I think the Xenical has something to do with it. That and the colonic irrigation!!

My experience was the same as starlights...as I was on ww and on a low fat diet it didnt really do anything. I even went as far as testing it by having a korma and the full works, not a single side effect !!!!!

Sorry, Im not sure what you meant there :) Why are you not a believer in low fat diets??
Because I was on a very low fat diet due to the side effects of xenical but I didn't lose any weight at all after losing the initial 20lbs, even though I was still morbidly obese. Low fat just doesn't work for me, and but that doesn't mean it won't work for others!

I was on xenical last year lost 21 pounds in a few months but then came to a stand still. The side effects are terrible i never felt at ease with it at all.

my pal did this and had orange stringy urgent diahorrea ...

:rotflmao: I did that too Sonkie, my doctor warned me that it might be very unpleasant after my weekly take away, when it didnt seem to be working I took it directly before it - still nothing.

I had great hope for Xenical :(

I'm starting to get a little worried with you're comments you know!
I have to admit that I haven't been taking them as regularly as I should. And to be honest as I am being concious of what I am eating ie low fat, I have only had one real episode that resulted in me being on the loo for like 'ages' when I had some fried fish minus the batter.
So when I am taking them and I am eating low fat this could be why I have had no hastily retreating to the loo attacks (just like Starlight said at the beginning of the thread)

I have tried SW before and lost about a stone and a half on it. So when I went to see the dietician yesterday suggested to her that maybe I follow the SW diet but still take the xenacol. She couldnt really say if that would be a good idea or not. Her way of thinking was that red days are meat days and meat has a lot of hidden fats. But to me I would have thought that taking the xenacol whilst on the SW diet would have been a good idea as anything that would have been higher in fat would have been sorted out by the xenacol.

I am now totally confused!!

Hee hee glad im not the only one, well I was expecting all these side EFFECTS AND NOT A SAUSAGE SO HAD TO PUT THEM TOO THE TEST AND NAFF ALL HAPPENED ......oooops caps lock....lol.

tried them, yes they work providing you stick to a diet. Take them regularly and use the support offered by the company who make them... They're not a miracle cure, and like anything, you need to put in the effort!
You might as well try them, you've nothing to lose except the weight!

I was on Xenical and it only worked whilst I stuck to the regime of taking a tablet after food. It had dreadful side effects (rampant diarrohea) and wind but they definitely did work somewhat until I sussed out that if I had a curry/chocolate/kebab/chips etc etc etc and didn't take a pill I didn't get the side effects! (This is a number of years ago now)

I think they have their place and if you are disciplined enough to keep taking them and follow a healthy eating plan (i.e. very low fat with these tablets) then you should have good losses...

Best wishes to you :D

Unfortunately tho even sticking to a diet and taking them regularly they dont always work :(

OOOOPS, did someone mention leakage??? yep, sure they did, some call this SMUDGING, either way, it's not very pleasant.

I took them for no more than a couple of weeks for this reason, I was scared to go out of the house!

I wish you luck either way hun. I love SW, although I'm currently on the Cambridge Diet, I need to cut food out altogether at the moment, still can't be trusted with it  But I do like SW, WW is good too. At the end of the day, we know we just have to eat less cals and fats and we should lose weight, if only it were that simple eh hun?

good luck to you xx sj xx

The leaflet in the pack does specifically tell you that if you don't eat fat then not to take a tablet. So, it stands to reason that if you are on a low fat diet they are not going to work because all they do is help your body not to absorb fat but to eliminate it.

If you are on a diet then you don't need to be on these although I guess they would work with a low carb higher fat diet like Atkins.

I think they encourage people to carry on with bad eating habits as you can stuff all sorts of fatty foods down you yet take one of these tablets and then just pass it out as a horribly fatty poo. (yuk).
