1 large onion (sliced into rings). red onions work better cos they're a bit sweeter than white.
1 clove of garlic (Finely chopped) or lazy equivalent
Frylite
1 level tbsp of plain flour (3 syns)
350ml of stock (boiling water poured over 1 beef stock cube)
1 level tsp of Marmite
2 tsp of soy sauce
1 tsp of balsamic vinegar
1 pinch of mixed herbs
Ground black pepper to taste

Method:
Fry the onion slices till soft. After five minutes add the garlic.
Sautee until the onions are soft and transparent. Add the flour and stir in well. Let the flour get a bit nutty. Add the stock gradually, stirring constantly. Then add the Marmite, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, mixed herbs and black pepper.
Bring the mixture to the boil and simmer very gently for 20 - 30 minutes. Stir every 5 minutes until the gravy thickens and the flavours blend.

This will make enough for 4 to have a small portion so less than 1 syn each. Its delicious with sausages and also makes a decadent accompaniment to a steak if you add some mushrooms and only half the stock so that its a little thicker.

Sounds lovely, thanks for posting, will give it a go soon and let you know how it goes x
