Ketosis questions?

Determind to do it!!!!!!!
Right. When you are in ketosis, do you automatically burn fat(lose weight), or not?

Sounds dumb I know, but I really want to do this 100% right, I have messed around enough already.

This is my first great 100% day so far.:D

Oh and to add to that, How quickly can you come out of ketosis, is it almost instant or over a space of time.

God I must sound mad, lol.

Ketosis is a fat burning state so what does get burned off during ketosis will be fat (or muscle) - what it really means is that your body has nothing left to burn other than it's own supplies. This happens when the liver is deprived of the stores of glycogen it usually keeps around as fuel.

Does being in ketosis automatically mean you'll be losing weight? Yes and no. Weight loss can stall while in full ketosis for any number of reasons, and on a diet like Atkins your carb/cal intake is never going to be identical every day so there's no way to expect consistency. Even if you did have an identical intake, fluctuations in your body chemistry mean you might lose three pounds one week and stay the same 'the next.

What ketosis guarantees is that the fat you burn will be body fat. It doesn't guarantee weight loss every week, though it does highly increase the likelihood of it.

Frustrating, eh.

Cheers rose bug!, what about the other question?

you can come out of ketosis instantly if your carbs are too high... itll then be another 3/4 days to get back into ketosis xx

If you eat something thats going to take you out of ketosis, in my experience you'll know within 12 hours. Unfortunately there's no way of preventing it once done, but you can get back into ketosis much quicker than the average 4 days (in fact within 12 hours) if you've just had one tiny blip and then get back on the wagon. This is because your body won't have to fully deplete it's glycogen stores again. Not something i'd recommend though.

Thank you carrie and rosebug, you are stars!

There is just so much to think about, although I think If I follow the rules of induction, what would be wrong.

Just don't want to fail due to silly little mistakes I guess.

You guys are all doing so well!

i can get back into ketosis quite quickly ........... so i am lucky in that respect ............. good luck xx

I get back quite quickly too...if it's just a one off "mistake" meal lol

It is good to know how other people deal with mistakes, you can't help them sometimes, but to know it will not damage things too much is comforting, as we all make mistakes sometimes.

It also depends how active you are.

You're body will burn carbs and alcohol ahead of fat. So, if you go exercising the next day, you'll burn through more of the carbs you ate the previous day. Like the guys above say though - it's not a perfect science. I've done a couple of weeks where I've been on the perfect diet but only lost 1-2lb. But! That's no bad thing 1-2lb a week is excellent for just changing your eating style.
