What do I do?

Me and the hubby have been asked to go out for a friends birthday next week and it is at a all you can eat chinese buffet. Now I don't want to be antisocial but I am guessing there will not be alot that I can eat and I don't want to have to make excuses for not going. Do I just go with the flow and then back strict induction the next day or try and work around what choices there are?

Sorry to say but...I think your options are going to be extremely limited, unless you're happy with a couple of plates of crispy seaweed (though I think that's often sweetened too :( ) I'm thinking that this is an 'all you can eat' kind of buffet?

If I were you I'd just enjoy it. Maybe just try and stay away form noodles and rice and go for the drier meat dishes.

That said, I haven't been to a chinese buffet for YEARS! Maybe I've forgotten a lot of what they serve.

Crispy seaweed is usually covered in sugar, and most chinese meats have a flour or sugar coating. I -think- I managed to get away with some crispy duck, plain and no sauce, on Sunday, but chinese food is very tricky. If you want to try and stay as atkins friendly as possible, go for dry meats and boiled vegetables. However the buffets I've seen are usually 99 percent battered and sauced. How good is your willpower? I'm not sure mine would hold out, if I'm honest. Personally, depending on how good a friend it was, I'd make excuses. Or if it's a full menu place that also does a buffet, I'd explain I was dieting - or say I was gluten intolerant - and ask if I could pick something from the main menu.

It's not going to ruin your life if you do go off plan for one night, though. Just be aware that you might have a lower loss, a STS or slight gain that week - not just from the carbs but also the high salt content so some of it will be water. If you can handle that and keep your resolve to get straight back on, then it will just be a minor blip in your path.

I think I am going to have to try and make as best a choice as I can. It's a shame its in this place but hey its not my birthday lol. Thanks for your replies... I have pretty good willpower and I suppose it can't be helped these things happen. Will I have to go through induction flu again after 1 meal? I am in this for the long haul so as long as the weight comes off 1 little blip is really lost in the grand scheme of things.

3 large prawn crackers are 5 carbs, I know that much lol

Knowing what I'm like I'd have that meal off and et what I wanted to and suffer the pain tomorrow lol

I would probably just try to limit the damage and eat small portions :)

Saying that I'm getting married in July so hen night, wedding day and honeymoon are going to be a holiday for me. I will try to limit the carbs but I'm not going to worry too much xx

It is difficult, the salt ribs and crispy duck are about it really, I'd just enjoy and then be strict after

My advice would be to say you need to avoid msg, ask the waiter if any of their food does not contain it, if there is nothing there to eat, ask if they can cook you some plain chicken or meat and veg, they should be able to do that for you., Job done!

Now that's good thinking on the msg, most chinese places use loads of it

Cheers Jim, I did not realise I was clever, lol.

Thanks everyone :) I will see what is available and make decisions based on that I think. Its so hard to eat out and stay on plan unless you can order a steak etc...
