Hey there, I really want to start having different meat in my meals, as I basically live off chicken :D and don't usually try fish just in case I don't like it.

What would you reccomend to start me off hopefully loving fish?

I love love love tuna, and I know I hate salmon, but thats all my fish experience!

just wanted to add too: what fish is the cheapest/best value ect. on a student budget so cheap is often good for me :D

thanks xxx

apparently mackerels nice but it stinks, so ive been told lol xxx

Hiyas, cod is a good one to start with, easy to cook, you can bake in oven with sliced onions, peppers, cherry tomatoes and chilli flakes ( optional)

You could even try salmon, I love the M&S tail end, it's got no skin, you get two packs for a fiver, I tend to grill them with chilli flakes and have it with loads of salad which includes sweetcorn.

Give it a try, it's yummy. May even do salmon tomorrow.

Xx

thanks for the advice hun :) i might go and get some cod to try. i hate the smell of fish tho it stinks the house out, do u fish lovers like the smell? xxxx

Hey there,

I've been eating loads of basa lately. It's £2 for 2 fillets in Morrisons. It's quite plain so I grate some lemon zest and add black pepper loosely wrap in foil and put in oven for 15ish minutes. Tastes lovely and doesn't smell! : ) I think its sometimes called cobbler too.

Have a look at the fish week threads for more ideas x x

Try the Tesco Value Fish in Butter Sauce. Its a good introduction to fish (i think its pollock/white fish) with lots of creamy yummy sauce all for 2 syns on a red and EE day :) x

Hi there I'm really not a great fish lover but trying hard to do a fish week to give my metabolism a boost.... Goin well so far :)) defo go for cod tho cod loins are really really nice with lemon juice squeezed over!!! Try asda I went yesterday and they had packs of cod loins in the fresh fish aisle rolled back.... Got 2 massive loins for £2.50 can also be frozen too. Good luck x

Sent from my iPhone using MiniMins

Sea bass, Cod ,haddock etc the cod and haddock would probably be the cheaper options most super markets run offers on buy 2 for a certain amount etc

thanku everyone i kno wat fish i will buy now! ;) isnt cobbler or basa meant 2 be a bit weird? i heard that it is un environmentally friendly? xxxx

seabass is the nicest although not that cheap, rainbow trout is lovely and very cheap, i always fry in fry light and add herbs/spices to it, last night i did tuna steaks marinated in lime and chilli

oh wow tuna steaks where did u find them and how much did they cost hun? ive been thinking about tuna steaks mmmm are they nice and juicy or do they dry up when u fry them? xxxxx

mmmm Tuna steaks in chilli sounds sublime where did you get the tuna from?

tesco, over £5 for 2 though!! but hubby loves them, it depends how long they are cooked they can go from lovely to dry in seconds, i usually just sear them or really keep an eye on them

woo looking forward to trying these! do u find them in the freezer or the fish counter?(as i wrote that i felt like a right donut) lol xx

Yeah, I did read some stuff about basa bein from polluted rivers etc but also read stuff about food standards in supermarkets, wouldn't sell it if it wasn't safe etc..... just depends who u want to believe I guess! But for cheap, tasty versatile fish I think its fine! x x

i get them in the chilled cabinet or off the fish counter, they do sell them frozen but i like to inspect what im buying!!!

I have bought birds eye (i think) cook in the bag basa fillets before (in chilli i think) they were lovely

That sounds like it would be cheap too! only have a tesco express near me though, so i'm not sure if they would stock this.

I also heard tuna steaks were expensive, but the Sainsburys local that is the only one near me I think has a fish counter, albeit a v. small one.

I also heard M&S could be a good score for buy two for so much offers on fish.

I am going shopping tomorrow, so may report back with any purchases. Keep the suggestions coming, thanks :D

We have the Tescos Value River Cobler ( which is also known as Basa) 2 large fillets are £2! and its nice. Hubby who normally only likes haddock actually requested it.
Farm foods do bags of frozen fillets of Basa and tuna steaks for a good price ( i havent actually tried them though, so not sure what they are like)

This is great - I didn't know Basa and Cobbler were the same thing! I've been doing a couple of fishy weeks, and have really taken to basa, but hadn't yet tried cobbler!

I wont buy cod as it's so over fished, although I guess loads of things are, and it's cod we happen to hear about :-\

I find fish pretty dear, but the offers you get on it are fantastic. Also, this week, I went to Farmfoods and sticked up on frozen fish for only a few pounds :)

I couldn't stand salmon until I turned 30. Now I love the stuff! I still can't stomach it 'plain', like, just poached - but any version of smoked salmon I think is nomnomnommy! It's worth trying the different types :)
