Yay! Sorted my sweetener issue :)

Hi all

A few days ago I posted a thread re sugar and sweeteners. I used most of my syns for sugar in my cuppas and did not want to use artificial sweetener (aspartame, sucralose and co.).
Now in Sainsbury's I have found agave nectar, only half the syns of sugar and I received my order of Erythritol today - happy as Larry, the stuff taste just like sugar! The calories are negotiable, in the US they count 0.2 cals/g, in Japan 0 cals and the European Union considers labelling it as 2.4 cals/g.Whatever, still 95% less than sugar and not a lab produced chemical. People with IBS should be using it with care, so they say and excessive use could cause gastric symptoms.
Wapedia - Wiki: Erythritol
Now I can use my syns on more important things, such as Belvita biscuits ;)
Happy xx

Brilliant !!!

I don't think that "the calories are negotiable" is quite what you meant to say, but I can't for the life of me work out what you did mean.

Think of all the fun you will have now trying to think up ways of using those syns you were saving for your drinks!!

Negotiable in the sense as different countries use different values. I will use the US caloric value (O.2cals per g) as it has been in use over there for long (in Japan they consider it calorie free). The EU will not specify Erythritol as its own substance but will use/label it with the average caloric value of the sugar alcohol substance group.

I think I will have a glass of wine tomorrow, instead of white sugar in cuppas :D

Just a warning that I tried this and just a little of it certainly caused a LOT of 'gastric distress'. I am sensitive to sugar alcohols, though.

I have had two cups of tea and a yogurt with the stuff in it. So far I feel perfectly fine - but then, I have no food allergies/intolerances, thankfully. And if that would occur, I still got the agave nectar.
It's just that I cannot stand the taste of artificial sweeteners and I have been desperately trying to find a palatable alternative. :)

Oh I see - complete misunderstanding on my part. Sorry.

I never realised that different countries gave different calorie values to things - how odd!

Hi ya
It is honestly the first time I have heard about different countries using different caloric values. But I admit that before I embarked on my weight loss journey, I was never really bothered.;)
