STARTING ON MONDAY

hi and welcome to the forum. smoked mackerel is fine as long as it doesn't come in oil but I'm afraid corned beef is a no - there is too much fat in it.

have you got your oatbran ready? it's an essential on this diet, and plan to eat a lot in the first few days. feel free to start a diary in our diaries section so we can give you help and feedback on how you're doing.

Hi Aussiemaid,

Welcome to the board :) I'm on day 4 of attack and loving it!

Hopefully you'll enjoy it too

welcome
that cottage cheese is fine

I don't think one can get "fat free" cottage cheese in the UK either (anyone? brand?)

Just checked my Sainsburys Be Good To Yourself cottage cheese and it's marked as less than 2% fat. It worked fine for me during both Attack and Cruise.

I couldn't find any fat-free ones in the supermarkets near me, so you may well be right, Jo.

That's what I thought - it's all about moderation though. Some might eat a tubful in attack (dairy being "unlimited") and then there could be issues!

Same here, but I found the 'value' brand ones (Asda and Tesco) are lower, usually below 1. Presumably because they have a bit more water added/remaining which makes them lower fat per 100gr? I any case I too have been eating the ~2% versions all through attack & cruise and did not come across any problems.

Very true, Jo. The most I ever ate in one day would be half a normal-sized tub.

Anja - I hadn't realised that. I didn't see any value cottage cheeses at Sainsburys, but I shall look harder next time, and it's good to know that it's possible to find them in other stores.

No - not available in Sainsbury as far as I can see... Their Quark tastes yuck as well (at least to me and my German friend agrees :D), so I tend to get my dairly from various sources as the opportunity arises. I have now switched mostly to strained home made yoghurt and Fromage Frais though, now that I've finally managed to FIND IT... even the staff I asked on time had no idea...

I don't know how you can all eat cottage cheese - yak! I can just about manage it cooked into quiche type affairs, but 'au naturel' - no way!

Well I was quite partial to cottage cheese and yoghurts etc before Dukan, so no problem there.

You can always make your own fat free cottage cheese at home (confession - it's been years since I tried this, but my gran did it all the way through the war years!)

This is how she did it:
Put 2 pts of skimmed (fat free) milk into an enamel or steel pan, and heat gently, stiring from time to time, until it is too hot to dip a finger in, but not at boiling point.
  1. Take it off the heat and let it sit for a few minutes.
  2. Add two tablespoons of lemon juice , and stir – it will start to spilt into curds and whey (just like Miss Muffet!)
  3. When it is a bit cooler, pour into a large coffee filter in a colander to drain (my gran used cheese cloth, but an Italian friend clued me into the coffee filter idea when I watched her make ricotta).
  4. When the cheese is as dry as you like it, add salt, and whatever other flavourings you fancy.
Not only should this be fat-free, but much of the sugar in the milk will be discarded with the whey (which in the wartime went to feed a pig!)

Thank you - this will definitely be on the menu on Thursdays.:D
