Never tried one, but a very common saying around the gym I used to frequent back in the day, was "abs are made in the kitchen". Meaning that if you want sexy slender toned abs and etc etc, you need a fair amount of muscle and a low enough body fat percentage for them to be visible.
You might also find that doing a few sets of crunches or general resistance work that hits your abs (deadlifts, heavy curls etc) is a lot more rewarding, emotionally and for your physcial fitness.
