Eating fat on Atkins

Hi all, have been lurking for a while but have decided to take the plunge and start Atkins (won't be starting till Monday tho as going away today till Sunday), my question is, is it okay to eat fatty foods, it's very hard to get your head around. I have read the book but just worried about eating too much fat, is there a limit to how much fat you should eat, for example butter, fat in meat etc. Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Welcome :) No limits percentage wise. Obviously you can't sit there drinking oil out of the bottle though (not that anyone would...). The thing about this is you eat util you're satisfied and you can do that by eating high fat foods. The higher the percentage of fat the more weight you will lose (in Atkins' book he talks about 3 1000 kcal a day diets, 90% carbs - small gain, 90% protein - 0.7 pounds per day lost and 90% fat - 0.9 pounds per day lost). Don't be afraid of fat because it's our best friend!

Basically eat as much high fat and protein foods as you need and watch the carbs very closely and you can't fail. It's all about insulin. Control insulin and you are in control.

Good luck and have a good trip!

Yes it is hard to get your head round it all after years of advice to the contrary, Atkins said you have to eat fat to burn fat and there is a scientific theory about it somewhere. It worked for me. :)

I have the same concern. will too much fat make me fatter? i started on monday. so it`s my 5 th day and i lost 2 lb only. i worry that i might eat too much sugar but when i use the web calculator it seems i never exceed 12 g.
and i want to ask something that might sound silly. where i can buy this ketose strips. actually after how long on induction the process is supposed to start. it seems my body will take ages ;(((

It's all true...fat is good for weight loss :)

pd, when you say sugar do you mean carbs? Your not meant to be eating sugar.
Ketostix can be bought from any pharmacy counter. They cost just over £5.

on my way to the pharmacist.now!!!

thanks cinta.

i read everything possible and i completely understand why fat burns fat.
when i said sugar, i meant the bloody sweetener. i used for my black coffe. it helps me a lot. and also sometimes i drink a little bid of thisno sugar added double concentrate sqash from tesco. it says 0.5 g sugar in 25 ml. i never drank more than 50 per day.
i only ate half cup of cabbage today. but will eat some more lettuce tonight.
will go and buy Ketostix and let u know straight away. thanks a lot. love u guys

this is what i am doing. counting all the carbs + the sugar from the sweetener.
i don`t eeat much carb, apart of the 3 cups green salad, the rest of my food is 0. i mean i don`t eat mayo, cheese, and processed meat.
i buy mince meat from a buther and he uses just meat , i watch him ;)
then at home i add a handful of shredded parsley or spring onion. i count the carbs from the green herbs. and that`s all. tuna can says 1 g sugar per can. what else could be?
Its the total carbs you should be counting, not just those that sugar.

but you said that fiber in carbs is not sugar. for example i count a small lettuce as 3 g, as it says on the packet 80 g=10 kcal, 1.5 sugar? i count it double just to make sure i don`t exceed the daily allowance

What sweetener are you using? I use candarel tablets and you need 17 of them to make 1 carb. Granulated sweeteners are higher in carbs so use tablets if you can.

thanks . i use candarell as well. but it says 1 tablet is o.5 carb. you see, i am counting everything. i use a lot, 2 in my decaf black coffee, 3-4 times a day. that`s why i make sure i don`t eat any other carbs in my meat. i didn`t even eat any diary. but now when i went out i got some sliced cheese, that claims less than 0.1 carb in 100 g cheese. 10 in pack, i ate 3 already but won`t abuse it.
3 cups max shredded lettuce or green cabbage and whatever parsley or spring onion, etc . i make sure in total my green stuff doesn`t exceed 3 cups. and still 2 lb, it`s my 5 day today. yesterday i seemed too be lighter than today. it`s confussing really

I think you're reading your candarel label wrong. The carbs are closer to 0.05 - see

http://www.livestrong.com/thedailyp.../food/canderel/canderel-low-calorie-sweetner/

Actually 0.06 so two sweeteners would be 0.12 and four would be 0.24 and ten would be 0.60 as in 10 sweetners = just over half a carb. 17 tablets is 1.02 carbs.

I looked all this up when I started the diet too ;)

So don't worry about your canderel.

Also try not to weigh daily. The human body is in a constant water cycle of holding on to a little, letting a little go, so weight can fluctuate quite naturally by around 3lb a day. The most accurate way to track loss is by weighing once a week at the same time after the same routine (for example every Thursday morning after you've been to the loo but before you've eaten).

Agree that it is tough to get head around eating fat! Took a couple of weeks not to feel guilty - shows how we are indoctrinated. Now I am highly suspicious of anything saying low fat lol!
