Please help, I just want to hide in bed!

Ok, so I'm going to be very open & honest (ah the security of writing anonymously online).

I need to do something about my weight, but more importantly to stop my binge eating, which is HORRIFIC! I've tried counselling but it, bizarrely, makes it worse as I'm a control freak so other people interfering makes it worse. I have read that Atkins stops cravings & makes you feel good, so I thought it was worth a go.

I guess like lots of bigger people I hate that being big affects my personality (I don't want to socialise, I'm grumpy, I hide my body etc) and now my knees have started to hurt, I know it's because of the weight.

I have a few issues though - I'm pescatarian (I eat fish but not meat) so I wasn't sure if Atkins would be do-able as lots of veggie food is high-carb.

Also, I can't weight myself. This is because I know that seeing what I weigh will trigger a huge binge and I don't want that. More than being overly bothered about losing weight (although I want to) I want to rein in my eating habits and lose the weight as a side effect. I think this is more important so hope to just do induction for a few months to lose enough to put me in a better 'mental' place then maybe weigh myself. As someone who has lost 6stone with LL, only to pile on more, I can't face knowing my weight, although guess I need to lose about 7 stone. Do you think this will matter?

Finally, hello and sorry if I sound very down. I guess I am, but am hoping to get a grip, get this under control and start feeling normal. You all sound very cheery and are doing so well!

Any advice/tips welcome :).

Annie

The first tip i can give you is get your head in the right place, are you there would you say?

I have done LL and know how disciplined you have to be ........ so you can do atkins you just need to make the 2nd step as posting on here... you have made the first step ...hugs to you xx

Hi Annie,

Well your story is a mirror image of my story. I too did LL and lost 5 stone only to put on 6 last year. I don't want to socialise or go dancing or go out full stop!! I completely understand that weighing yourself triggers a binge, it did for me until I realised that for now I was on the right path and I didn't put it on overnight so I ain't going to lose it overnight (but I still wish it would, usually in the morning lol!!) I have been up to 20.5 stones and I recently saw a foto of me at the weight and I looked hideous!!! I am now 18 stone but previously been down to 12.5 stones. My weight has gone up and down like a yo-yo. Please do not think that you are on your own. We are here for you and I know this because the fab people on here are always here whenever I need to off load.

Atkins is truly marvellous and for me curb my cravings. I am a huge emotional eater and compulsive person. Thankfully my compulsiveness only goes to control, food and work. I have in the past tried to swap my drugs of choice to alcohol but it doesn't do anything for me!!

You are amongst friends here and I can truly say that I have opened my heart more on here than with my OH as I find that I am with like minded people who completely understand where you are and what you are going through; I do because I have been where you are.

Welcome Annie ((((hugs)))) xxx

I am a binge eater too and an emotional eater. Anything can set me off, at any time of the day or night.

Only Atkins calms that frantic urge to eat. I cannot commend this way of eating and living too highly.

I am vegetarian but manage perfectly well. Have a peek at The Atkins Community site for further advice on meat-free low-carbing. And buy the latest Atkins book, if you can - Amazon or eBay. You'll find out all you need to know. Best of all you will be able to eat until you are full and still lose weight!

Good luck, and welcome to Atkins x

Hello Annie and welcome:wavey:

Theres alot in your post that i wanted to quote but couldnt figure out how to, so here goes

You have lost weight before and you CAN do it again...but only if you truly want to. There is no magic cure...all diets work if you stick to them and you do need WILL POWER....no matter how quickly a diet claims you can lose weight, you still need to stick to that diets boudaries...ie LL only 4 food packs, water- Atkins Low carb...you get the picture?

You have obviously got to a stage where you dont want your weight to control your life anymore, hence why on here...so WELL DONE for taking the first steps:)

You can do Atkins if you only eat fish...Im sure there is a poster who is vegetarian and they have followed Atkins way of life. You can eat salad and veg on induction. Please read the stickies above...they are invaluable...and get the book too!

If you dont want to get on the scales, then dont! Measure yourself and go by your clothing.

I've just finished my first week on Atkins and after the first few days...I now feel GREAT! I too have followed LL, and now i am following the Atkins way of life to lose the rest of my weight.

Good luck hunn and Im sure other more experienced Atkiners will be on to advise you.x :grouphugg:

You have had some great comments above Annie so there is not much I can add, but I wanted to add that you are not the only one who is in this situation.

I too have about 7 stone to lose and am very much a compulsive, emotional eater - but and its a big but, I havent binged at all or even had any overwhelming urge to eat junk since starting low carb eating just over a week ago. So it does help with curtailing urges to eat.

It does help if your head is in the right place to start tackling your food demons, but true as well is that starting to do something about the food demons can help to make you feel more positive about yourself because you are starting to do something.

Hope you start feeling more positive soon xx

Hi Annie welcome

I think not weighing yourself is a great idea - if you are willing to go by clothes and feeling good this is a great start. For my side, i would always have said i have NO willpower - well that was before i discovered atkins:) Now i dont have a physical monster inside making me feel like i'm literally starving - life seems to have got much easier and i watch myself ignoring some foods with amazement!

Xx

Hi Annie *waves*

I cant really add anything that the wonderful people on here havent already said!

Two years ago I weighed about 20stone, and since then have lost 6 stone, and over christmas, put another stone back on. I've got about 4 stones still to lose before I'm where I want to be.

My first big step was to know I had to do something about it, and Atkins seemed like it was ideally suited to me. My second step was to stand on the scales and see exactly what I had to lose.

To me, atkins doesnt really feel like a diet, and if I'm hungry, or need my comfort food, I just eat something - because I can. As long as I'm snacking on low carb/carb free stuff, then I dont have anything to worry about, and I get the fix I need.

We're all here for each other, but I honestly do recommend getting someone to write down what weight you are before you start, so you can at least see how good the diet is at a later date, even if u cant bear to look at it now.

Good luck, toots xx

Hi Annie. Now you can see what a lovely group of people with have on here, who are HUGE on support & advise. Don't beat yourself up hun, just try low carbing of some sort. I know how carbs can trigger cravings & binging, I've been there mate!

Claire's idea of someone writing your weight down for you to look at later is a great idea.

Good luck x

Anyone here ever awakened in the night and cried aloud, OMG I need to eat some LETTUCE! Right now!

No... lol.

We crave carbs, we binge on carbs, we gain weight because of ingesting too many carbs usually in the least healthy forms such as cakes, bikkies, chips...

Low carbing is the only way I have found of soothing my carb cravings but it's not quite a magic wand, as others have said here a certain amount of self-control is needed, as well as determination to stick to the plan more often than not.

And we can eat. We have permission to eat. Amazing.

Wow, thanks everyone, I can't believe the response! The best thing is not feeling so alone, which I currently do as none of my friends have the same issues and my boyfriend is a model of self-discipline. How annoying!

To answer your question, Jim, I'm not sure my head is in the right place. However, I've spent the past two years hoping for some sort of revelation to click me into action. I guess I finally realised I have to take the lead and do something for myself.

I think that a lot of this seems in the planning (as I guess most WOE is). I have bought 3 veggie low-carb books and am very inspired by the recipes. There is a great one for 'spinach bread' which is just spinach and eggs cooked so that it forms a bread. Will have a go at it later and post in the recipe section if it turns out ok.

I guess the only way to try is to start and see how it goes. So, I'm starting today .

Will post my recipes in the thread. Am quietly very excited!

Thanks again,

AA x

Thanks Jim, really useful, you've done so well! Not sure if you saw my question in another thread (think it disappeared behind new posts pretty quickly)! Wondered if you just ate steamed green veg for dinner or if you put anything on them, like a sauce? I'm not so keen on plain green veg!
thanks,

AA

Hi Annie as u found and so did I, this forum is where u r not alone. People are different whether they are self disciplined or not. But here u can be who u want to be. The guys on here know loads and no question is too trivial.

One day at a time is my current motto. I've tried to lose weight quickly with disastrous results. I am looking forward to hearing about ur spinach bread, sounds intriguing.

Welcome Annie!!! u have nothing to lose (apart from wt ;) xx) by giving it a go. Xx

Hi Annie, I have just started too. I am really quite confident at the moment although I'm sure there will be days when I just want to give it all up. Perhaps we can help each other through those days?
I do know how you feel. I have never been heavy like this before and it makes me so miserable!
I wish you all the best with this and as we are both starting at the same time I'll keep a special eye out for you. :gen126::wavey:

I do steam my veggies other than salad, and then add lashings of full fat butter Annie. :)

hello Annie :wavey: and :welcome2:. This site is a great place to be. I done LL back in april 2006, nearly five years ago now:eek: and I still keep trying to get back the "success" I had first time with CD and LT (except as I lost 4st and put on over 5, it wasn't quite a success, more disaster lol) and it just hasn't sunk in yet that it doesn't work for me as I keep on trying.

I'd love to do low carbing as I'm diabetic and the white flour just creates more sugar cravings. At my biggest in Nov '08 I was almost 22st and I've remained 19.5st for the past two years somehow. Anyways good luck and keep posting here, the lows as well as the highs. :)
