Does Anyone Here Have PCOS But Dont Need Metformin ?

I just went to the Dr. today to check my insulin levels. And the results was pretty good. My insulin or sugar was slightly higher than normal, however it's bad enough to be prescribed Metformin.

In other words my insulin levels are pretty much normal, it's just slightly above normal. So the Doctors talked and decided that my sugar levels really wasn't bad enough to be prescribed the medication. I have been referred to a dietitian and doing my own weight loss in order to resolved this problem. And I will be retested 6 months from now after I lose a bit more weight.

Has any one else come across this problem, and if so What did you wound up doing as an alternative.

Hey. I have PCOS and my sugar levels are all normal - its my hormone levels which aren't. I was prescribed Metformin to help me conceive by a hospital consultant, it wasn't for any diabetic related illness. I don't tolerate the medication very well though so I don't take it any more. I'm not sure if this helps with what you are asking but thought I would let you know. x

Yeah it kinda do...the Dr. Told me my hormones were kinda high. But they felt I didn't need the medication for it. You did help because u said you negative response to taking... and that's prob because your sugar was fine, and that could be why u had such of a hard time with it. Now I'm just thinking beside weightloss, what's another alternative ?

Prob not, I didn't even know what it was until I joined this website. So once I learned more about it, that made me want to get tested. I don't think its a bad think if u don't, however if u never get tested then you'll never know what's happening in your body.

So when u can... go ahead and get tested. No matter the results, at least you will know.

I've never had my insulin levels checked either. A few times I've went to the doc with a problem, i've had my blood taken and checked for diabetes, but other than this, I've never had it done. Should I ask?

I'm prescribed Metformin, but rarely take them, as I'm really not sure what good they do, can anyone advise?

thanks,

i also have not been perscribed anything, but he said as i am not planning a family anytime soon etc. Have never had my levels checked... although like some of u have had bloodtest to test for diabetes etc.

I don't think I have either, so it can't be that bad not to (I hope)!

I've seen people on here talking about being insulin-resistant too - I have no clue whether I am or not :\

I was prescribed Metformin when I was first diagnosed, but it really didn't agree with my digestive system. I'm on Dianette (the pill) for it now.

My sugar and insulin always come back normal and I've had more than my fair share of tests (my doctor, as lovely and well meaning as she is, is obsessed with giving me a diagnosis of diabetes!). My other hormones all come back normal too. No metformin for me - just a referal to the dietician to lose weight, and I have to be honest with you, as lovely as they are, it's not really helped me or told me anything I didn't already know. She just asks what I eat and tells me off if it's bad and says well done if it's good :s Still, we've finished our one to one sessions now and she has me in with her group session (so a bit like weight watchers I assume only NHS run!) so we'll see how that goes :)

I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS and my doctor prescribed Metformin. She told me it was purely to aid my weightloss, as my insulin levels were fine. I've had no problems with the tablets. I started them slowly, taking one a day for a week, then gradually upping the dose to three a day. I've been taking them for nearly three weeks now and I've had no side effects at all. I'm not sure if they're helping with the weight loss though, I'll find out when I go for my weigh in at the doctors next week.

For me, the pcos specialist said that metformin wasn't advisable, due to my BMI.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was in my early 20s and don't know what exactly was tested (although it was my blood). I was given spironolactone which didn't help at all, and now I'm med free. I do want to see a consultant again soon because hirsutism and cystic acne are getting me down, and my bouts of depression that I get as a symptom of PMT are becoming unbearable every month :(

I don't take anything for mine, not even the contraceptive pill.

I find just being healthy is best for me although i do understand that i have been very lucky symptoms wise and may have needed something otherwise.

My insulin levels have never been checked but I've been prescribed metformin anyway. We are TTC.

Hi - initially I was prescribed normal Metformin and had a terrible time with it. I was on the loo almost constantly so gave up. About 3 years later though the manufacturers made Metformin SR (stands for slow release) and I have been absolutely fine taking this. I understand it costs more than the normal version (GP told me) but could be worth a try for you if you had problems previously. :)

I don't know if my insulin levels have been tested (so many hospital visits I've lost count) but I was prescribed metformin. I took it without any problems for a number of months but it made no difference so I came off it with the ok from my consultant. I gather the success of it really varies person to person, for some people it changes their lives and for others it doesn't seem to do anything. I was one of the latter.
