Is it just me that thinks they are expencive???

I am going to meet up with friends next week for a spot of dinner. Rather than drive to the city & pay crazy parking fees as well as fuel we decided we'd all get the train. There are 3 of us coming from 3 different directions.

1st train - mine 1hr £13.00
2nd train - ok this is fair enough & priced well I think, 38min journey £5.50 return
3rd train & what is really well priced - 27mins £3.60 return.

Makes me really p'd off that mines so much more expencive. I know its cheaper than fuel & everything but i'm feeling the pinch at the mo & so this isn't helping. Oh & I have a grumpy head on today!! lol
 
Have a look and see if the train company does a group travel offer. I know National Express trains do a deal where if 3 or 4 people are travelling together then you only pay for 2 people.

I used to pay £5k a year for my train ticket to London - the girl in the manchester head office giving me the cheque for my season ticket couldn't believe it, and said her ticket was £10 a month!
 
I know that it is probably too late now, but for future reference - if you book online well in advance there are some amazing bargains to be had.

I use the First Great Western or Cross Country Trains website, but you can also use the National Rail one, or thetrainline.com (although I think they charge a small fee, not sure).

You give the dates and the rough times you want to travel and you get a table showing you the prices for the different times. Sometimes travelling an hour later or earlier can make a huge difference to the price. I once had to go from Reading to Southampton Airport, and for the mild inconvenience of arriving at the airport about an hour before I needed to, I got a first class ticket for £4.90!

But you have to book in good time to get the best bargains. You can pay online and either pick up the tickets from the machines at the station, or have them posted to you.
 
I always travel by train if I'm going further than into town, it costs me £7 to go to Edinburgh which takes me between 50 mins and 1 hr 30 depending which train I get, so it's not too bad, but when i go home I always book in advance. My parents live 300 miles away and on the day would cost me £97 return, but in advance I can get it for about £40. So for next time definitely look into booking in advance. National express website also does the cheaper tickets as well as trainline and the others.
 
Thanks for the tips - I have been looking & it seems this is the cheapest deal. Its no wonder IMO that there are that many cars on the road though when public transport costs aren't exactly appealing :(
