....The recent debate to organ donation is causing a stir. The goverment wants organ donation to become an opt out option rather than a op in option (as it stands at present). I was wondering how many people agree with this?

I myself already have chosen to be an organ donor!

Do you think the goverment have the right to make this choice for us & us to have to opt out if we do not want to participate...xxx

(as the is a rather sensitive matter i will understand if this thread is removed form the board)

Oooooh politics on minimins!

I too am registered as a donor & think its a really good thing to do. If people have a strong opinion, e.g. religious views, then they'll take themselves off. For example Jehovahs Witnesses carry a form with them all the time that says whether or not them want to give or accept donations. If this was held on a database I think it would make them feel more secure about their requests being met.

It also means that people who just can't be bothered to do anything about it help others after they've passed away rather than rotting in a box. I'm sure that there are a lot of people who do not have strong views against it but just haven't bothered to register so it will lead to there being more donors. I think its good but this is only my opinion!!!! Don't shout at me if you don't agree!

I think its a fantastic idea, you wont have any use for your organs after you are dead and if they can help others then go for it.

I THINK IT'S THE WAY FORWARD (oops caps lock )
the way it stands its allways a difficult thing for the doctors to approach the family in their time of disress, when they may not know what to do.
i suspect there may be many a family who have refused donation to only regret their decision once their grief has subsided.
this way so many people get a chance of life without adding to the distress of the dying person's family.
xx

I too am an organ donor - and think it is difficult for the family to be consulted at a time of distrtess and trauma for them. Plus they may have different views on organ donation to their loved one.

If it became the norm to opt out then people who didn't want to donate would do so and this would make life easier for families and doctors alike - and hopefully make more organs available.

Good thread Mandi, don't see that it should upset people.

To be honest, I don't ever understand the in's and out's of these things.

I do think its a good idea that more people donate their organs of course. But I also think that this just isn't a free world anymore. I believe everyone should make their own decisions, have they're own thoughts and beliefs and not forced into things.

I've always been 50/50 about donating my organs, the thought that when I die I could help someone save a life is lovely. But I'm warey, and I don't know why - I don't like to think into it, so I never have because it upsets me.

So I guess I believe that everyone should do what they want to do, however, if it helps saves lives then fair play.

Not really a great answer eh?

I don't understand politics one bit, but dammit don't take away anymore of our freedom!

Well you certainly aren`t going to need them are you, I think its a good idea, but i`m sure it will go against the human rights acts.
Its getting like everything " tick the box if you don`t want third party mailings"
Just my opinion.

Of course it's a good idea.
As so many of you have said we won't need them.
waiting til you're on life support & then approaching the family is TOTALLY the wrong time to start the process. It also raises all sorts of potential conflicts of care amongst the attending health professionals, not to mention the emotional turmoilamongst the family. It has to be agreed in advance & that means before the bus hits you.

What I don't understnd is why this idea is suddenly being given such a lot of air time when it was proposed 20 odd years ago.

I can only hope that this time it gets through the system into law. This is one instance where a 'Nanny state' approach will benefit many & harm none.

Ps I've got a 'use any bit of me for what ever you want'card rather than just a kidney one.

gosh this has got to be the only useful thing the labour party have actually done:eek::D
no seriously its a great idea, why not, Im all for it

If you take something without my permission..... is that not theft.
I am not against organ donation and have signed donor cards in the past but I'm afraid I have to say that this "opt out" idea seeem like a violation of an idividuals human rights.
Presumed consent is the thin edge of the wedge... where does it end. If an individual is "incapable" of giving consent to sex it is still rape so why should you be able to take their kidney's/lungs/cornea's/heart etc.
I think it should be the norm to ask for explicit consent to transplant from every inpatient in hospital but to "steal" their organ's after their demise is not acceptable.Education is what is needed. Not legislation.

The dead have no property.

No. you have ( under the proposals) the right to refuse to give.

Not even closely relevant. Taking something which is of no purpose to a dead person to preserve the life of another in a system where prior consent has been given whether explicit ( current system) or implicit( proposed system) has no parallels with sexual violation or any other forms of abuse of the 'incapable' be it by action or negligence.

How do you request the consent from a brain dead RTA victim?
Alex:cry:

In the nicest possible way I have to say I disagree with you.

IM AN ORGAN DONER oppss caps.....and im quite happy with that choice. dunno how i would feel if it was one of my kids but i think its a fab idea. my bits aint much good to me when im gone but then...i smoke...lungs are in sh1te shape...my heart...im fat ....my liver...i like a drink..... my eyes...not too bad at all...yay...have my eyes. pitty the people that end up with my organs lol.

How about using them as a teaching aid Karen ?;)

can use them as sports equipment for all i care...i'll be dead!

I used to carry a donor card but threw it out because my husband (now divorced) would have refused consent after my death. Does anyone know if the next of kin still has to give consent before an organ can be donated?

I think its a fab idea....as has been said, if you dont want to be involved you can opt out. Have to say that if someone close to me passed away, the last thing I would want to hear from a doctor is can we have this bit & that bit, I think a lot of people ( eh....like moi!) just dont get round to getting donor cards etc. God forbid, if myself & my daughter were killed or anything I would want what could help other people to be used, but yet am not entirely sure my family would give consent. And I'm too dam ditsy to carry a donor card...dont even carry a purse most of the time

once i'm dead, they can have what they want, they'll be no good to me.

I've registered on line to give away anything they want - no good to me. I think it's a great idea.

Surely if you would accept a necessary organ transplant for yourself / a loved one then you should be willing to offer your organs once you are dead ? Hypocritical otherwise.

I think its a great idea, better that everyone is classed as a donor until they opt out ... easy enough ... same with voting, we all get the card through the door its up to you then to vote or opt out.

We all still get an option not to donate so no probs as far as I can see. Lots of deserving people out there and so many bodies buried with perfectly usable organs.

Now that IS a good Q, & I don't know the A.

Seems such a waste doesn't it.
