in two weeks time i do this walk !!!
18 miles at night on the top of Exmoor
ok dont want to carry much and at 8 miles there is a stop for soup and pasties ....so what can i take to eat ...boiled eggs cubed meat
at 18 miles theres a stop for porridge and bacon butties i may have the bacon as i will have done a fair old trek i am taking a pack of sugar free sweets as well and loads of water stops are on the way
so any clever food ideas ????

I'm all ears for this too as I'm doing a midnight walk in May for charity. I'll look forward to hear how you get on scrumper

I presume if it's a night walk, you'll be wearing a hat... so now thinking cap - LOL - on to find nice FLAT foods to place on head, under hat... I'm thinking steak! chicken breast... all carried on your head!

Seriously, I walk to work each day carrying a tonne on my back (breakfast, lunch, snack, FULL handbag, etc etc) so I wouldn't worry unduly at the weight of one meal and some water.

Have you been training for this? I walked 8km yesterday (4.5 in morning; 3.5 in evening) and my legs ached last night and I've been walking for a few years now... 30km this week! (but never that much in one go!!)

Why at night? Shame to miss the scenery! is it for charity?

Am I the only one who would just eat everything (that I liked) offered? I'd definitely have the soup, not the pastie (not keen) and would have the porridge and bacon from the sandwich. I know -too many carbs!

It will all be burned off, Tan, and you won't want to be keeling over - you need carbs for a huge effort like that (says she who bar walking/exercise bike does NO exercise...)

yep its gonna be a toughy over rough terrain and in the dark also we have to follow a map ( that should be fun ) solve cryptic clues i can see it being a long night average time is 8hrs 22 mins and a marines team did it in 6hrs 30 ....were all overweight and unfit ....whos idea was this arghhhh bugger mine

I don't know about the bacon (as much as I'd be tempted), but the porridge might be a good idea. This is one case where carbs really help.

Also, I've never seen those Atkins (?) bars that Bren eats, but they may help perhaps (and hopefully not be too damaging), in this particular instance?

mm thats one i may look into ...the porridge is at the end of the walk, not sure if that a good idea .....
will see how i feel on the night .
The health food shop in town has loads of sugar free stuff and probably will do atkins friendly stuff will go see !!!

Jo have you lost the plot LOL?
Cheeseburger pie is a good idea :) meatloaf? filling and substantial. crab sticks maybe not a great idea LOL

Crikey look at your weight loss Vicky! WELL DONE YOU!!

DD - Bren is in Australia and her protein bars are far "healthier" than ours...

I admire you Scrumps... but I won't come and join you!! too far!!

lol awww thats a shame !!!
cheeseburger pie now theres a plan

thanks Jo.
You can get better protein bars here from health food shops -better for you than the atkins ones.

yes scrump the pie always wins :D

Porridge at the end kind of defeats the object, so I wouldn't go for that, unless I was really desperate.

I didn't realise about the Aussie Atkins bars being healthier than ours (thanks, Jo). Not so good, in that case. Probably a good idea to follow Vicky's advice and pop into a health food shop to compare the nutritional values. Some of them may be okay.

I do love the meatloaf suggestion or the hamburger pie one or even Em's mince tortilla, though. All of these are very filling (especially the tortilla - I have a big appetite and can only manage 3/4 of one).

<what's wrong with my steak on head idea? I didn't ask that it be rare?!>

I think your hat-steak idea has merit - kinda like putting a steak in the engine bay of your car wrapped in alfoil (OK, so maybe that's an Aussie thing?)
Anyway, you could start with a frozen steak and have cooked dinner at the other end:p

How about protein shakes? When flying/travelling home, or even when out to the library for a day, I take my shaker (with a wire ball inside) and several sachets with whey protein, dry skim milk, dry stevia powder and flavoured if I feel like being pampered. The whey protein I use is the unflavoured Impact Whey protein here:
http://http://www.myprotein.com/uk/products/impact_whey_protein
I just scoop several doses (20 g protein, skim milk to taste, sweetener - if any - to taste, flavour) into ziplock mini bags, and mix it with water in the shaker when needed; even if there isn't pure hot water, have used tea, and it was OK every time.

Louise, it depends on the shake, really. First, contents: I have checked Slimfast, Exante, CD and Big Loser (I think), they are not OK for us; too little protein, too many carbs. I mix my own using the pure whey protein. Second, I only use them in emergencies - a day out or travelling, and also when have been too lazy to eat and my calorie and especially protein intake for the day has been bad - so again an emergency of sorts. Also use them in deserts like jome-made mousse, to raise the protein count.
DrD doesn't recommend them for habitual use, though - he warns about the dangers of prolonged use of shakes/protein powder as potential triggers for eating disorders, especially in the weightloss rebound period, but says in certain circumstances (holiday, travel) it would be OK. Can't give the page as I am using a Kindle version, it is somewhere in the chapter on Conso.

thanks Frac think i may steer clear its only one night and a bit of cheeseburger pie, boiled eggs, loads of water and coffee I reckon i should be fine I may smell a bit but its for charity lol

LOL, if you smell, the others should be charitable.
You know what, I just imagined a rewrite of Three Men in a boat, with them doing the Dukan diet (along with Montmorency who would surely be happy putting a paw or two into their Dukan supplies of chicken and beef! Now there you have a case for protein powder for emergencies!)
