What should I bring back to Holland from England?

Just imagine that none of the convenience foods you use for SW are available where you live. What would you want to have people bring you?

This weekend I'm going home to England for a week. First stop is ASDA to fill a suitcase with essentials that I can't get here. :) I've got an idea of the things I want to bring back with me, but I wonder if there's anything I'm missing? They have to be foods that keep well and that can survive a short plane flight. Oh and get through customs!

Here's what I have on my list so far:

sugar free jelly
fry light
alpen lights
ALDI 70 cal muesli bars (2 for a hexb)
all bran bars
golden syrup
options/highlights
chicken bovril

Ainsley Harriot's Cous Cous, Mugshots,Scan Bran, Options chocolate drinks.

When I lived in France I used to stock up on quorn, curry powder and other spices such as fahita mix, oxo cubes, veggie gravy.... There were lots of naughty things too (like cheddar cheese!!)

Are you any where near roermond chick? There's a supermarket there you can get golden syrup from, I'll have to double check the name for you though

Pootler, I don't have any useful suggestions to add - but I do hope you're coming by car, or at least not flying budget or you'll have to wear all your clothes back to holland to free up your luggage allowance!!
I loved in Utrecht for a few months a student and all I seem to remember eating is waffles and pancakes with chocolate and lovely thick yogurt with chocolate sprinkles in - and I wonder why I now have to loose weight!!
Hope you have a fab trip x

Oops, sorry, can now see that you are flying - best plan for lots of layers on the return trip!!

Oh I can probably get Golden Syrup from one of the English grocers in Amsterdam. But since it's imported it'll be priced as though it's actual liquid gold! Not spending my curly wurly money there when I can bring a tin back from home. ;-)

Oh my goodness, wearing all my clothes on the way back. Don't give me ideas. My wardrobe is tiny anyway now that barely anything fits, so I probably could! Luckily I'm taking my son with me, and he has child-sezed clothes and a grown up baggage allowance. Should have plenty of room. :)

thanks for this thread Pootler, I'll be in UK / NL in April and was thinking of asking the same question!

are you sure you can't find golden syrup in NL other than at the expat shop? - I'm sure our local Jumbo had it, or try the toko again! if you can find it it'll give you half a kilo to play with....and don't forget to check the totally random food assortment in Xenos - I remember buying Ainsley cuppa soups and Sainsburys own brand penguin biscuits there in the past!

and to turn the question over to you - are there any SW finds in NL? other than the kwark which I fear won't travel well!! we will of course be bringing back cheese, magere rookworst and dark chocolate vlokken or hagelslag!

I've never seen those in Xenos! But you have to be quick I suppose. I will watch out for them, AND visit the Xenos more often. I work near the one on Kalverstraat so I can go every day if I want.

Never seen golden syrup there though, or in the big Albert Heijn. I know I HAVE seen it in a weird random place before but don't know where. When I see it I do buy it, but it's so rare! Same as with Cadbury's. Curly Wurly's are, oddly, pretty much the only Cadbury's thing you can get here now.

SW finds in NL? Hmm.. will have to think about that one. I find the cocoa here makes a much chocolatier scan bran cake than UK cocoa. Other than that I can't think of anything travellable. The Dutch don't seem to go for diet versions of food, or convenience foods much, compared to the UK. I can think of PLENTY of non-SW foods though. Stroopwafels! Ontbijtkoek! Sambal! Satesaus!
Are you coming back for a visit soon then?

Hi Pootler - I love the randomness that is Xenos!

We'll be in NL and UK for all of April, and first week of May as our annual leave (escaping the hottest part of the year here 45-50!!) which also means we'll be in NL for Queens Day - YAY!!

I think I'll be off the wagon to an extent while we are away, as the thought of dumb things like a bag of chips, a bowl of cornflakes with proper milk not UHT, or a porkpie seem too much to resist...I just won't have everything I want all on the same day!!

Have a great UK trip yourself!
