is it possible to kick start this diet with say 4 milkshake drinks and fruit for one week, then start properly. Only asking as my sister in law was told by her doctor to drink just 3 shakes a day to lose weight for 1 month, before an operation. She did this and lost 3 stone. So surely if a doctor can reccomend this, do you think it is ok for just 1 week.
All feedback welcome negative or positive, thanks.

I think the advice would be not to do it that way unless you speak to a doctor. To be honest depending on how much you're eating at the moment I think even Slim Fast the proper way is a bit of a kickstart anyway, it was a complete shock to my system the first week and I was hungry all the time so can't imagine what I would have felt like on just 3 shakes!! And I lost 4lbs the first week, don't think I would want to lose any more than that.

Was it definitely Slim Fast the doctor recommended for your sister in law? Because there are other food replacement programmes out there that are suitable for total meal replacement, Slim Fast isn't one of them. That's why they tell you to have 1 balanced 600cal meal as well.

Hope that helps?

yes was slim fast, the consultant at heartlands hopsital told her that is what they are recommending now for fast weight loss before surgery. She was on it for a while as well.

I think the only problem with drinking just 3 shakes a day is that, as someone else explained to me in another thread, if your body gets used to that low calorie intake (3 shakes a day would only be 600-660 calories) you would need to keep up a low intake in order to not put on weight again. So while it might be ok as a short term fix before an operation, I think if you were to stick with that you'd find that as soon as you came off slim fast and started eating normally (i.e. 1800-2000 calories) you'd probably put weight on and all the hard work will have been for nothing.
