Slimmer of the Week

I just need to have a little rant where it's "safe"...

WHY do people just put scabby fruit that's better off in the bin into the SOTW basket?

I was SOTW (again) this week and more than half of the stuff went straight into the recycling. There was one apple there that was so icky it was all wrinkly and my finger went through the skin and it was gloopy inside.

When I'm choosing something for the basket, I think "What would I like to receive" - my past four weeks' offerings have been:

A can of diet cherry coke (lots of people commented that they didn't know this was available)
A can of slimline tonic (the class between Christmas and New Year!)
A box of grapes (bought that morning)
A muller light vanilla yoghurt.

Sometimes I do put fruit in, but it's all EDIBLE. If I wouldn't eat it myself, then I wouldn't put it in. On other occasions, I've done food that was "lower" syn than I thought it would be - but nothing above 3 syns - and I write the value on it in permanent marker so the recepient doesn't have to look it up.

What's the basket like at your group? What kind of things would you like to see in them?

I hear ya but I suppsoe we are all different and often in a hurry and then theres the cost of the items and there are quite a lot of people in the group that only have small losses (and not necessarily through any fault of their own) that probably aren't that enthusiastic about the basket.
I like you try to put decent stuff in and occasionally put things in that are new that others may not have tried as yes thats the sort of item that I'd like to receive. We've had stuff in packets out of date let alone mangy fruit lol and stuff with a few syns which isn't ideal either.

I have never won the SOTW, have contributed to the basket (not every week - I forget) but I put a hi fi bar in or take fruit which is fresh. Imust admit I have commented a few times that the basket looks disgusting sometimes and I wouldn't eat it.

I think the C ought to provide just a small basket of fresh fruit each week - or just go with the certificate - I must admit that I don't go all out to win SOTW and never have done. (maybe why I've never won it then!),

A while ago I was particularly broke and Hastalavegan sent me the contents of the SOTW basket she had won that week. It included mug shots, mini ryvitas, sugar free jelly, etc. Our group really didn't have much of this happening, like you, usually a couple of bits of fit for the bin fruit - and I was so impressed with the stuff I recieved that I suggested we change from fruit to low syn items to my Consultant. This has taken off pretty well and people often contribute something more often now. In the past few weeks I have taken in Sula sugar free sweets, mikado, sachets of low syn hot chocolate, lentil dahl, and other things that you wouldn't necessarily know were low syn. Makes the basket way more interesting and worth winning.

Ive had slimmer of the week about 4 times now and dont mean to sound ungrateful on the first occasion it was okish a little was chucked when i got home the other 3 times more than half got chucked as it was really manky and bruised, old and unedible if i was the consultant id be embaressed to hand it out.

I'm really lucky to have a group that, like Minx mentioned, does great baskets. We have all sorts of things, mug shots, pasta n sauce, tinned toms, pasta, rice, tinned pulses, tuna, jelly, and then loads of veg. One member brings in fresh veg that she grows herself each week. I love winning the SOTW basket because it saves a good amount on my food bill :D We also have a raffle each week which is a massive box of locally grown veg. I never take part in it though because I never win!

Maybe talk to your C about it and she could say something to the group?

Hmmm, I've won SOTW 3 times, and often the basket in the raffle if the SOTW can't stay, and it's alwaes been good. We don't just have fruit, we have low syn/no syn stuff too. I've been known to put in Mug Shots, Pasta and Sauce, baked beans, Options drinking chocolate, tins of tuna, fruit, etc etc. The only thing our C asks us not to put in yougarts, as they could go off.

What a shame! I suspect that only people that have won it before actually make an effort with it. To be honest they would be better not contributing at all! I always forget to bring fruit so I always put in 2 hifi's and give the third to my wee niece who always goes along with my sil, keeps her quiet lol. I put the full pack of hifi's in the week after xmas cuz I figured the winner that week majorly deserved a good win!

Oh and well done for winning xxx

My groups excellent for SOTW foods
we have things like mug shots, low-syn jelly, diet coke, fruit, vegetables.
Hope your group wises up to this soon - its a treat for the people as an incentive!
Congrats on your SOTW awards :) XD x

In class I always had to leave a little earlier to collect my son and my consultant knew this so never got chance to do the raffle and one week she told me in front of the class with the clapping that the week before I had won the slim of week and proudly handed over to me a rotten dripping bag of stuff and rotting fruit :(
I was proud and disappointed .

I so wanted to win this week as someone had donated a dozen of her hen's best laid eggs, needless to say I didn't.

Ours isn't usually that bad, I always try to add something diferent than fruit as it gets a bit boring.

How stupid of her! You must have been raging!!! No offence but she should have given it to the next on the list but still kept your cert for you, so you were still SOTW technically. How daft!

Yea I was , when I first started to go I did a raffle and always ended up giving my tickets away , and because I'm in a very active job and go to the gym I got all my silver bronze and gold in 3 months and I was basically made to feel I'd cheated some of the other members :) but now do it at home and use this as Suport that's so much better :)

When i've been to my class before (about a year ago) and it was bigger, the basket was usually great. As I live in the countryside a lot of people have small-holdings, allotments or veggie patches, so there was always loads of fresh, home grown produce. She would also make converstation about the fruit bowl, before giving it out, which I think encouraged people not to put rubbish bits in just for the sake of it.

I like it when you get low or syn free foods in there, so much more useful than rotting fruit!!

My consultant goes to a local shop, buys a little fruit but then cabbages, and onions and all manner which will get used by anyone, always looks really fresh and gorgeous and then she asks us all to put in 20p, which alot of the stuff listed above is worth more than that, and so far I have not won it but I think this is a great way of doing it. However we do have a big group, and I know each week shell put a limit on it and then just hope she recoups something near the amount.
