Can anyone give me some advice...

Rhino

Ex-22 stone unit!
Hello,

Well in order to lose weight and get fit and healthy, I understand that I cannot continue my diet of everything that is bad.

I never really eat breakfast (a bad move..I know) and my lunch and dinner is normally very high in fat (fast food etc). I also tend to snack alot.

I need to sort out my diet completely, just going to the gym won't do it!

I quite like chicken, and tomato based stuff (pastas with bolognaise sauce etc) and I am a fussy eater, so as you can imagine it's tricky finding something healthy that I like!

Just after your advice :)

Chicken breast is low fat, low carb, high protein, perfect parcel of food. You can do so many things with it, curry, make it a tomato based sauce, serve with brown rice and you have a low fat tasty meal. Chicken casserole, healthy heartt and a good way of getting some veg without it being just sat there on your plate. Chicken pasta, I make a chicken in mushroom garlic sauce, it tastes creamy but not a drop of cream in sight.

Try and avoid white bread, rice and pasta, theyre pretty empty calories. I'm not a fan of brown rice but can tolerate half and half. Do the same with pasta and you can buy 50/50 bread.

Make your meat as lean as possible, trim fat off where you can and drain and blot grease off things like mince. If you like burgers make your own (occasionally) theyre not the healthiest meal but theyre better than you can get from any fast food place. Look online for various recipes.

Not sure what other suggestions to make because "fussy" can mean so many things

Hi,

Good luck with the healthy eating, I agree with everything above. All would add is for lunch maybe you could start having subway instead of other fast food. They have a low cal/fat menu and it's very tasty! In addition youc probably benefit from buying a weight watchers magazine, i don't follow WW but there are always recipe ideas and it's packed with alternatives to higher cal meals. If you're still struggling after that maybe consider jointing a slimming club as they will educate you on eating healthiliy and give you diet sheets to follow that can easily be adapted to things you like.

All the best x

I like curry and tomato based sauces but the healthy living ones seem to be pretty awful. Would I have to go for them or could I have normal sauces with chicken and brown rice?

Never had brown pasta yet so will have to give that a try, same question as above in relation to pasta sauces.

One thing I have noticed since taking the Sida Cordafolia I have not been as hungry, and I have not snacked for days, I tend to have Special K for breakie, and then a meal and lunch, and dinner when I get home (although not particularly healthy meals, but certainly not takeaways like I was having).

Apart from the main meals I have been eating some Asda Low Fat Fruit Bars and also eating grapes at home.

I have although had some diet coke recently, which I don't think I should be having :(

I agree, although I don't follow ww or sw I buy magazine every month or so as the recipes are all low fat/ low calorie and help me avoid getting bored with food options x
Ps check calories on 'healthy' sauces compared to regular - there's is not usually much calorie difference but regular tastes SO MUCH better

Good luck x x

rhino, just a note on breakfast, special k is probably better than nothing but its full of sugar:( think there was a program on tv recently that highlighted this and because of this you might start snacking or getting hunger pangs earlier on. eggs are good, brown toast etc. i eat either porridge made on milk with brown sugar and its gorgeous and sometimes muesli and i find it does me til lunch without getting hungry at all. whereas on a day i had something else like cheerios or corn flakes i am starving in half the time:) and the muesli/porridge would have less calories too!

Make your own sauces. I never (or hardly ever) buy sauces and when I do the kids moan!

Curry - dry fry your meat, add a little water occasionally to stop it sticking. Add finely diced onion and any other veg you want, mushrooms, peppers etc, add more water, a heaped tablespoon of tomato puree, half a teaspoon of garlic granules, a good tablespoon of coriander leaf and your curry powder to taste, (i mix my own up but if you dont already have them all its pricey to start up so buy a medium curry powder) lid and let the natural juices come out of the onions for a minute or 2 then add a tin of tomatoes. continue cooking until onions are very soft and the juice from the tinned tomatoes has reduced to a consistency you like...voila, done

Tomato sauce for pasta. tinned chopped tomatoes, tomato puree, garlic, black pepper and italian seasoning. simmer to reduce to a consistency you like. You can also add chilli, cayenne or whatever else you think you would like to taste. I like mine fairly spicy and love cayenne in mine.

Also check out the recipe section...look for curry lentil soup posted by Miss Mango, if you have a blender you can make a fantastic thick curry base by adding less water than the recipe calls for. And if you have any misconceptions about lentils forget them...theyre pretty tasteless, absorb the taste of everything added but produce a thick and filling meal.

As fr the diet coke, some will say dont touch it but if it keeps you off the none diet versions then why not. I have diet caffeine free coke, prefer to the diet and normal versions.

I'll give you an example menu of mine...

B: fruit smoothie or bran flakes & a banana
L: Soup & wholegrain roll or baked potato with tuna & salad (not laden with mayonnaise)
S: apple & natural peanut butter
D: homemade turkey mince in a tomato sauce with green veg & brown rice

I'm finding this is working for me for now... I even have plenty of energy for the gym in the evening.

You'll have to go by trial & error until you find something that works for you but have a looksie at my diary on this section (Chocolatecat's Healthy New Life) to see if you can get some ideas :)

Good luck!

i would suggest you have chappatis? iv found that they are really quite filling... i have 1 of em with 2 tablespoons of curry and i feel happy... theyr warm/quite filling/easy to make and tasty too! having one every day with different curries means its healthy but also allows you to have different foods in the form of the curries....hope that might have helped in some way! :D
