It is our Christmas today.

It is the big celebration day here in Spain.

It is Epiphany and the day the kids get their presents.

On 03rd Jan. they give their letters in asking for the presents they want. On the evening of the 05th all the families gather in the main square and the kids receive one of their presents from the Magicos Orientales , their parents take them to the town hall in advance of the day, and the rest are waiting at home.

It is big time celebrating stuff here in the part of Spain we are in but this year after my Christmas excesses we have cancelled Reyes. Normally we have a special meal, traditionally it is shell fish, lots of king prawns, lobster etc, followed by lamb and to finish a Roscon. A Roscon is delicious shoe type pastry filled with cream and decorated with preserved fruits. It contains little charms in the cream and the person who gets the crown is king for the day and has to pay for the meal if it is in a restaurant. I think the tradition is different in different parts of Spain i.e. a baby Jesus figurine in the roscon.

We have been so good and the only thing we will do is have a nice long walk along the sea front later today.

I am feeling very virtuous.

Ooh that sounds lovely - it's so interesting hearing about how different countries do things. It must be quite a spectacle to watch. Fancy having to be organised enough to take a present to the town hall! Enjoy your day over there - well done for staying on the straight and narrow x

We have a similar celebration for Epiphany here in France on the first Sunday of the New Year. It also involves a flat puffed pastry, usually with either almond paste or apples (or in our case, both!) called a Galette des Rois (Kings' pancake) with a charm inside. Whoever finds the charm has a crown to wear and is king for the day. Funnily enough, there seems to be no 12th night superstition here, so Christmas decorations stay up for ages.

That sounds lovely. Those traditions are wonderful, both in France and Spain it seems.

It's a bit of a shame that we don't have such traditions and our Christmases have become somewhat more commercial :-(

Have a wonderful day. xx

PS - the roscon/galette sounds gorgeous!
