How do you guys do your food shopping?

Honeyoc

Is a crunchy mama!
I usually shop everyday. I decide what I'm going to cook and buy what I need on my way from work or text DH to get what I need. But now that I'm on maternity leave, it's a pain in the bum going to the supermarket everyday *lazy*

The problem is that if I were to shop say for the week in advance how do I know what to get??! Do you make a list of dinners to make for the week and then get what you need? Or just buy what looks good or on offer and then figure out what you're going to do with it all when you get home? Halp!!

going to sound obsessive but i have a white board with menu for 2 weeks and recipe page number or syns next to it , we do a weekly shop based on those foods only and the night before we make sure we got it out freezer and so on

I do a weekly meal plan, as I suspect a lot of people on here do. I work out what we'll be eating for dinner, various lunches and breakfasts, add in snacks, and whatever else we need, and write up a list based on that. If there is something great on offer, I'll either switch one of the meals out to be able to use it, or I'll work out something that I can make, and then freeze using it. Then I'll add the frozen meals to the menu plan another week.

If we run out of something during the week, I'll pop down to the local shop/greengrocers, or get OH to pick it up on his way home, but I would never shop daily, I'd end up spending twice as much

I do exactly the same woop woop:D

Thanks guys, sounds like agood plan making a weekly menu and shopping accordingly. I love making lists and planning, so I'll enjoy this! :D :D :D

I used to religiously do a weekly meal plan and then just shop for what I need.

But with pregnancy and the food aversions I have been getting from one day to the next it is impossible to meal plan, so I just make sure I have plenty of veg and storecupboard stuff like pasta, lentils etc and then meat in the freezer and use from that on the day for whatever I fancy.

So basically before I shop I check what I am low on. Seems to work for me at the moment.

Yes im a list girl too!!! I like to know what we are eating and know that i have everything in before i start cooking. I freeze my fresh meat and get it out in the mornings before work, ready to cook in the evening. i just like to be organised and i hate shopping as well so like to spend as least time as poss shopping.

I used to do a weekly meal plan, until we learned what we should eat and what we should stop eating from our previously unhealthy days. Plus we used to do 2 green, 2 red and 3 ee days a week so it meant we could manage that properly. Nowadays we don't bother, we've learned what we eat and what we don't eat, and basiically it has become our way of life, which is the great thing about SW. Neither of us have ever really eaten our syns either, we've sort of used them as a buffer if we decided to have a glass of wine, or throw a splash of something in whatever we're cooking, or go out for dinner etc.

So when we planned, I wrote the menu and the shopping list. Now OH does the weekly shopping without a list and just buys what he things, and I might ask him to get some specific things as I've decided I want to make something specific. All works well, and we still both continue to lose weight.

Same as Allie here. I tend to buy a lot of the same things but make meals that i enjoy eating every week! I like to try new recipes but it does get expensive as she said.

I go to Asda every Sunday morning and do mine.

I do a weekly Waitrose shop - and if we need anything extra i can pop to the co-op mid week (its walking distance!!!)

Do a rough plan of the weeks meals - get enough meat and veggies, but i always have extra meat in the freezer in case we need it. Although at the moment, i guess i could leave stuff on the patio steps its that cold!!!!!

:)

I am also like Allie - buy the basics everyweek, like fresh fruit & veg, plenty of potatoes, onions etc then things like tinned tomatoes, beans, pasta & meats. I also tend to freeze the majority of my meats & lift out & defrost as needed.

I get thing slik ethe extra lean minced beef every week but will make 1/2 meals from each pack & they vary from things like donner kebab, shepherds pie, chilli, meat loaf, burgers, meatballs etc so even though I buy lots the same each week, our meals vary :)

Wow this is all so intersting! It's so facinating reading about all the different techniques you guys have with your shopping. I think I'll stick to the weekly meal plan idea for now and as we establish a pattern, maybe I'll be able to shop more intuitively. The only problem is DH loves a good meal and lots of variety, so do I, so I make new things all the time which can get tricky lol! I think the only things I would be buying pretty much every week would be fruit!

Thanks so much for sharing!!
