i am a coward

metrognome

is getting better at it
i drive for a living and im to scared to go to work today as the roads are all icy :cry:and am feeling guilty as i said i would pick me mum up if i worked as she is not taking her car

NO! You aren't a coward, you are being eminently sensible! I hated driving in snow, now I'm retired I have the luxury of not having to. I'm sure your mum will understand.

hi metrognome i'm sure ur mum will understand i don't drive in this weather if i don't have to, i have been watching the cars go past my house they are slipping all over the place they have no control of the car it's lucky they havent slid into the cars parked along the kerb, u've done the right thing :)

When the roads get bad people should only be driving if it's absolutely necessary/an emergency.

No point taking avoidable risks.

don't blame you one bit!! i have to go to work in a few hours and its just started to snow  have had to park 2 streets away on a main route as my road is a night mare! stay in the warm !!!:D

I drove to work today......and 2 minutes after i got on the road a passing driver flashed the lights at me (hope you know what i mean) and then....i was like....WHAT?!>!>! i didnt understand.

I drove round the corner to a 3 car collision which gave me a total chill. One car on its side ......completely.....a woman in the road getting cars to turn round. 2 other cars with front missing off them. I was very worried it was my fiance as he had left 5 mins before me.....thankfully he had missed it.

Its not safe at these sub zero temperatures. If you are not a confident driver (i know i am not) then use public transport (if available), walk, get lifts with others who are more experienced......work from home!!

Take care everyone, and dont feel guilty Metrognome.... roads covered in black ice and snow.....they are terrible natural enemies and best kept well away from!

Some very wise words there. I'm a confident driver in that the sonow/ice doesn't overly phase me. Obviously I reduce speed, clear all snow from all of vehicle for maximum visibility (amazing how many peopledig a porthole to peer out of the window!)

I was snowed in and I left the car at home for 1 day and took three buses to work, three buses back and it was a nightmare! - I thnen took an emergency 1 day holiday and dug my car out and off the estate (it was like a war-zone!) - I then parked over a quarter of a mile from the house in order to get into work from a relatively sheltered spot!

I pick two other people up en-route but it is no fun and I class that as essential (no more holidays left). Anything else has been walking, i.e. shops.

Probably the only time I've envied 4x4's and Chelsea Tractors lol.

Steve - May I add that us 4 x 4 or Chelsea Tractors are not all bad. We drive a landrover discovery 3. We have this for the following reasons:

1) We tow a 26ft Caravan
2) We are a family of 6 and this has 7 seats
3) Its a terrific winter car

People do give us 4x4 drivers stick, however my husband is the first to assit our entire street. We have towed many cars in the last week up and down our estate. I drive a little astra. I hate the snow and do the sensible thing. I do not drive. If your not confident like this lady who started this post then do not drive. Its the safest option. I just wish people were not so harsh on 4x4 drivers. They are when driven and prepared with winter tyres, rope and spades the best and safest cars for this weather. You will find almost all 4x4 drivers will help you. My husband is also registered with the local 4x4 team whom assit with mountain rescue and other such like emergencies. This is voluntary and receives little funding. So were not all bad, if we can help anyone in this weather with our wonderful car we sure will!

Hi Becky

Nothing wrong with the 4x4's etc. People seem to knock users for no good reason at times.

I drive a 1.5 Nissan Note diesel. The reason being it does over 60MPG on a run and costs £30 a year to tax. It would be the running costs that would get me to be honest.

I'm one of these people who travel all over England and Scotland watching birds as that is my hobby and can be rather expensive.

What I meant was the cost of running wouldn't be an issue to get me out of our estate in the foul weather:)

I agree 100% we also have a cheapy car. 52 Plate vauxhall Astra. (my shed on wheels...LOL) its an ECO model one of the first actually. Also £30 tax and cheap insurance can get about 80MPG!!! It was tested from John O'Groates to Lands End years ago. I love it, its dead nippy but I also love the 4x4. I don't often drive it as its so big. However my car is like a go kart in the snow and I don't feel safe. I like the balance we have with a little run around thats cheap and eco friendly and then we got the 4x4. Overall I feel it make us the same as any other household with two regular cars. My lack of emissions makes us for his more than enough emissions!! LOL

£30 Road tax rocks. Get that for my Kia C'eed 1.6 Diesel

Off topic I know Becky, but did you do the Lands End to John O'Groats run, or was it one of them tests these people do from time to time?

I fancy doing that run (well, John O'groats to Lands End - oh and then back to Gateshead lol).

I read it was a 1.4 Toyota Yaris diesel (I "think" it was a 1.4) which returned an astonishing 113 MPG over the distance. Probably travelling at 40mph or something though lol.

My best run from filling to brim to filling to brim was 66 mpg between Kingussie in the Highlands to home - always between 60 & 70 mph folowing all speed limits etc. I'm sure at a lower speed I could better it but probably annoy motorway users!

Anyway, enough of Top Gear, back to SW....

;)

haha Steve...my little Astra has only done 2,000 miles this last year. The furthest its been from home is about 100 miles. It really does just go to work and back and tesco. I fill up with £55 for a full tank and its last me an average of 3 months! My hubbies disco does the rest of the mileage.

It was a story the car dealer told me about. He had it in an official release and was getting all excited about it. I just wanted a reasonably cheap to run car and this was it. Its a belter and have never let me down. Its red though...I have had a few bumps. All non fault I must add but I do think its unlucky and invisible!

Must admit I bet the run would be good!
