I'm totally

The weight is NOT shifting. I'm sticking to the diet and barely seeing any results at all. My CDC and I are baffled and thus have tried upping my water intake, lowering my water intake, taking me back off the bars but I'm starting to think about giving up.

I have PCOS however have never taken Metformin for it, I'm wondering whether I should be taking it in conjunction with this diet and whether that would show some results? I'm at my wits end. I love the diet but why am I putting myself through it for no results?

I don't really have much advice, but didn't want to read and run. Would it be worth having a chat with your doctor about it to see what he/she suggests? I know my friend suffers with PCOS and she struggles to lose weight, regardless of what diet she does.

It may not feel like it, but you are doing a fantastic job - if you were eating normally and perhaps thus cheating, you might be gaining weight - in that sense, you ARE losing weight now by maintaining. Silly logic, but I hope you can see what I mean.

Best of luck hun x

I'm sorry you are having a crumby time. I don't have answers - but know many people with PCOS are successful losing weight. I'm sure someone here can answer you question. Have you asked your doctor?

Looking at your stats you have done amazingly well already - I am mightly impressed. I'm sure you will start losing again soon, take care, xxx.

Ah sweetie that's just miserable for u...

Deffinately speak to your GP your working so hard on the diet...

Hope things start shifting for u soon...

Don't be disheartened hun, you may not of lost as much as you'd like, but I'm tremolo would of put on a lot more than you would like if you weren't on the plan... Trying to find a silver lining xxx

Bless, thinking of you. It must be so frustrating, especially as you have done so well. Keep your chin up, there WILL be a solution i'm sure - just wish I had it for you.
Sorry can't be any help, but just wanted you to know that I feel for you xxx

Hiya, I have pcos and was given metformin to take at the beginning of this year to help my cycles as I was trying for our 2nd child. I was also following weight watchers at the time and lost 13lb in a month so it may have helped shift some of that but can't be sure as I started at the same time. I would go and speak to your Dr as I can imagine your frustration. I hope you find an answer soon.xx

My Old CDC sent me this info when my weight loss slowed down - might be helpful for you:-

also this -

here it is with more of a sciencey explanation -

STALLS -- WHY THE SCALES CAN LIE

A biologist at Berkeley shared something very revealing on the low-carb system about 4 years ago that helps us all through the erratic weight fluctuations you invariably encounter: Fat cells are resilient, stubborn little creatures that do not want to give up their actual cell volume. Over a period of weeks, maybe months of "proper dieting", each of your fat cells may have actually lost a good percentage of the actual fat contained in those cells. But the fat cells themselves, stubborn little guys, replace that lost fat with water to retain their size. That is, instead of shrinking to match the reduced amount of fat in the cell, they stay the same size! Result - you weigh the same, look the same, maybe even gained some scale weight, even though you have actually lost some serious fat.

The good news is that this water replacement is temporary. It's a defensive measure to keep your body from changing too rapidly. It allows the fat cell to counter the rapid change in cell composition, allowing for a slow, gradual reduction in cell size. The problem is, most people are frustrated with their apparent lack of success, assume they have lost nothing, and stop dieting.
However, if you give those fat cells some time, and ignore the scale weight fluctuations, your real weight/shape will slowly begin to show. The moral of the story - be patient! Your body is changing even if the number on the scale isn't.

So even though you are being 100% the scales can still not show the loss but as long as you can feel it in your clothes then you know it's working for you and it will show eventually , you cannot fail to lose fat on 415-615 cals a day so keep going and keep being as strong as you are!"

Hey Nally

I can't imagine how frustrated you must feel but because of your underlying condition you have to throw out the standard CD rulebook on weightloss and expectations :( I agree speaking to your Dr would be a good idea to optimise your treatment regime (you may need to be referred to a specialist for this) so as to allow your body to work to it's best for you but even then I think you'll just have to trust that over time the plan will work for you (albeit differently than for the rest of us).

This might be of interest to you http://www.obgyn.net/pcos/pcos.asp?page=articles/pcos_and_diet_mckittrick

Take care

A few questions (cos I'm a trained investigator and I just can't help myself - plus I can't face doing what's on my desk at work just now - I'm on the verge of bawling my eyes out and I'm hoping this'll distract me enough so that I can function again...)

(1) When you say the weight isn't shifting, what do you mean? Did you lose any weight this week / last week / week before last?

(2) Has the weight loss just suddenly slowed down or has it always been a struggle?

(3) Are you doing SS, SS+, 810? Are you, hand on heart (sorry but have to ask) doing the plan 100%? You're not adding in any extra nibbles here and there?

(4) Any chance you could be pregnant? Constipated? (Both? :))

I'm sorry you are going through a tough time on the diet right now. I echo what others have said, speak to your GP. I hope things get better for you.

In the 6 weeks I've been on CD SS I've lost half a stone. Some weeks it goes down and others it goes back up but I've not lost more than 2lbs a week. I was 100% to begin with but am finding it harder and harder to be 100% when the results are so disappointing even when I'm sticking to it religiously.

It's always been a struggle so it's not a plateau and I'm definitely not preggers (chance would be a fine thing if you get me!) and my bowels are regular.

I've booked an appointment with my Doc for Friday to see what he says. Thank you all for the support and advice, I'll keep you posted! xx

{{{hug}}}

Then that really is pants. No wonder you're so fed up. Yep, a trip to the GP sounds like a really good idea. Just one thing (cos my OH has terrible trouble losing weight too and suffers from hypothyroidism) - have you ever had your thyroid checked out? Might be something to ask your GP - GPs can be wonderful but sometimes get wholly fixated on the thing you present to them (i.e., your PCOS) and forget that a problem might have a different cause.

Hope you get some answers soon x x

Good point well made Lily! :)

Nally - definitely think it is worth asking your GP to run a full blood check (to include endocrine (hormone) function)

i hear ya!! Although no medical condition, I don't seem to be losing either. Doing week 3 now and have lost a toal of 11lbs ( on my scales) and 8 lbs on my cdc's scales ( weighed with clothes on and in the middle of the day:)
V. frustrating but I am doing 810 and trying to stick to it 100%. Is it possible that I am eating too little?
S xoxo

Oh dear l know how you feel. I`m on Exante and my weight was slowing down and l added a meal next WI l lost 7lbs. Am not sure whether it helped or not but never the less l got a result. Go to see your GP and have this sorted ((hugs ))

That's brilliant Nally :)

unfortunatly gp's cannot prescribe metformin for pcos it has to be initiated by your consultant

i was on metformin, my consultant insisted i should be on it for life unless pregnant or breastfeeding but the gp's have been messing about for the last few years, even insisting i should be re tested for pcos. finally getting to see the gynacologist next january lol

my weight loss is also slow ( and if i fall of the wagon i have HUGE gains - most in a week was 18lb! ) i keep plugging away on cambridge as when i decided to give slimming world a try a couple years back i stuck to it and gained 6lb so for me its really gotta be cambridge

i have pcos. it's hard to get the weight off on normal diets but i've always seem to drop it on this diet. i was initially on metformin a few years ago but since having my kids my doc seems to think that i just don't need it any more! the fact a specialist consultant advocated me taking it is beyond him. nevermind. i would say that it did give me a massive help to loose weight and it is beneficial to be on it. in conjunction with taking metformin a forerunner were the glucose tolerance tests. they found that my insulin levels didn't drop down as quickly as they should have done. i was told i was insulin resistant but this is not the same as being diabetic.

i've been lucky in that i've had my 2 kids and i've managed to loose weight on this diet but i do find that if i slip off the maintenance plan i put weight on very quickly despite doing a heap of exercise.

i know that this is a good diet for us with pcos cause with the carbs being low is has minimal impact on the blood sugar levels. you still have a bit of weight left to go so i would say drop the bars totally as they do make it harder to loose weight. drink the right amount of water for you and then maybe put in some exercise. i think that once you get past a certain weight the insulin levels sort themselves out more and you weight loss will probably be boosted. it is hard when you don't loose any. very annoying and upsetting. just stick with it.

you are not a failure, you just have a medical condition which can effect how quickly you loose your weight. i would say that getting metformin seems like a must for you. a few things i suffered with were the usual...

infrequent periods and they were all over the place
more facial hair (so embarrased that i had laser surgery on my facial hair) can't spell today
spots
loosing hair on my head
trouble loosing weight.

after taking metformin i found this...

my periods were spot on (took a while)
my appetite went down dramatically
my facial hair was still there but thinned a bit
i lost weight without even dieting.
