Pardon??? What did you say???

Busy busy busy!!
Just come back from the hospital for a hearing test .... and I do have mild hearing loss. It is in the inner ear and there's nothing that I can do - except when/if it gets worse, have hearing aids. It was the opposite way round graph to elderly hearing loss, but common amongst families who have hearing loss when young (not applicable) or in people who have had meningitis (I have - but when I was 8!!!)

So all i can do is turn TV/radio up ... ask people to repeat themselves ... and pretend not to hear my kids when they ask for money!!

Those of you going to Dublin .... speak up when talking to me!!!

:D

As you probably know, I'm deaf. Quite badly at times. Hearing aid not suitable evidently.

Anyway...my tip is to just agree with everyone until they give you a strange look.

TV. Use subtitles.

Do you find it helps when people speak up? Doesn't work for me. I just hear loud gobbledegook instead of soft gobbledegook

Think I might have bought something from a cold caller on the phone today. Damn. Mustn't keep doing that. Costing me a fortune!

I've had meningitis too, twice! I am sure i have some hearing loss, perhaps i ought to get it checked out. I really notice it when i am in a crowded, noisy room, i cant seem to tune in to one onversation. It's almost like there's too much interference.

Kids still drive me nuts with their noise though!

I didn't know you were deaf actually. Do you lipread??Sign language??
I can hear TV if it's turned up and conversation is fine if on a 1:1 basis ... but not in a noisy pub or crowded room scenario.

I'm not deaf Bev, i think i may have the same hearing loss due to meningitis as you ! I really ought to get a hearing test arranged!

I lipread very badly. Do a lot of guess work. Hear music through a sixth sense that I've developed. Easier with my shoes off, so usually teach piano barefooted.

Same here. Can't tune in. Much easier 1:1. I like to pretend I have normal hearing and can fool most people most of the time by observing body language.

Sometimes I get frustrated though when people can't give me straightforward answers. I've learnt to ask questions about important matters in a way that can be answered yes or no.

Others just haven't learnt how to answer them though:(

Me: Is it on Friday?
Preferred answer...Yes (or no)
Usual answer: asdjafis;ofyae afihfl jasjdhfiu ajhfdjaluw ashd8q

Really helpful :D

If I don't want them to know I'm deaf, I'll ask them to jot it down for me so I don't 'forget'.;)

All good fun in Deaf Land :D

Sorry Bex our posts crossed - I was replying to Karion!!!

LOL now it looks like i need my eyes tested too!!!

I am actually relieved to have it diagnosed as I thought I had a problem ... and although nothing can be done - at least i am aware.

LOL Karion
My kids talk like that when i can hear them!! My middle daughter especially will not answer a question with one word when 200 will do!! Can't wait until i can tune her out!!!

Oops, sorry Bev, I've ruined your thread now! LMAO!

Not at all. Meningitis twice! Blimey...that's just greedy. What people will do to get attention:rolleyes::D Joking aside. Pretty scary eh!

I've tuned out most of the school kids. I'm told we are really noisy:confused: They've even moved me to the furthermost part of the school where nobody dare goes.

Don't know what they are talking about:confused: Lovely quiet classes mine are;)

It's a weakness in my family, my daughter had it at 6 months old too. We are lucky to be here TBH. I could get it again any time, but at least i know the symptoms now, and wouldnt hesitate to take myself to A and E.
