Any runners out there?

I'm seriously considering doing a 10k run for charity next year. Any pointers on how to build myself up?

I do alot of swimming, but am afraid of the cardio machines in the gym. Can walk for miles atm but anything faster takes it out of me.

If I do it, it will be the Bristol 10k on the 15th May next year.

Will be running for cancer research and think it apt as I've suffered it myself. Would be nice to give something back and give me a non scale target.

Hi Chris, I used to run a lot before I had my son. Really want to get back into it but never seem to find the time.

I started off really, really unfit and could only run for one minute and then walk for 4. I did this for about half an hour three times a week then gradually increased the time I ran and decreased the intervals of walking if you see what I mean? Within about 2 months I could run for half an hour non-stop and then I used to just go out for as long as I could to build up my stamina. It didn't take me too long and I took it very slow and steady, which is what I think you have to do to make sure your body gets used to the extra activity.

Like the PP said, the Runners' World website is great and they have a forum there, too.

May should be totally achieveable to prepare for 6 miles. You just have to listen to your body and take it as slowly as you need to.

Good luck! Every time I hear about someone else running it makes me want to get out there again. She says, sitting on her bum on the sofa drinking an Options hot choc

I'd offer to do it with you, but i live nowhere near Bristol!

That's no good now is it?!

As i'm a bit self concious I shall play with the running machine at the gym. The Couch spud to 5k seems a good start.

I like the idea of alternating the running with walking to give me a breather.

i would love to do summit like that but still got too much weight to lose imo ... and i live not to fr away from bristol :(
