Quorn - an acquired taste?

Ok having never tried any quorn products I recently purchased quorn sausages and burgers. I found the sausages particularly not to my taste, but then again, I was never particularly fond of good, meaty sausages, probably as I alway used to have cheap and cheerful ones.

The burgers I found a little more palatable, but preferred them covered with bean to assist the taste. I wouldn't say it was awful, as I am sure there will be people out there who like quorn, but my question is, if I am like this with those products, it is a fair assumption that I'd not get on with the quorn mince and other equivalents?

I see nothing wrong with meat, especially good quality lean cuts, but just wanted to at least try the quorn as I know it is free. I see little point in having to cover it in something to enjoy.

On a different note, can anyone advise where I can locate the sausages in the SW book? can't recall the brand but they're low fat ones.

I really enjoy Quorn mince when its mixed into a veg chilli, as you can really taste all the different veggies, beans and the chilli flavour. Sometimes I find with mince chilli the mince overpowers it a bit, so I'd start off your Quorn mince adventure with a chilli. I like the sausages but as you say they are an aquired taste and nothing like 'real' sausages.

You should have no problem with the quorn mince, I have cooked my friend a quorn mince cottage pie and he didn't taste a difference!

I find that any Quorn product that you can eat with a sauce are tastier. I would recommend the sweedish style meatballs that are frozen. These are quite meaty tasting and even my carnivore boyf doesnt mind them!

quorn mince is great i always add beef oxo cubes to it and you cant tell the difference the quorn breaded fillets are nice although are 1.5 syns each i had the black pepper and lemon fillet tonight which is 5.5 syns it was lovely. I also use the quorn chicken style pieces in curry i made some for some friends and they thought it was chicken:p

I cant beleive anyone could actaully mistake quorn for meat.
The texture is so diffrent.
Im just trying quorn atm and have thought the bits ive tried so far have been ok, i just worry it will make me ill :(

well having been vegetarian for 19 years I have eaten Quorn since it came out mid 1990s.
I love it and make all 'meat' dishes with it.
My meat eating hubby does eat it and likes it, but my friend hates the texture.

maybe give it a go see what you think to the different products

Why are do you think it will make you ill?

I'm the other way round, as if I cook meat I worry it hasn't been cooked right so I don't enjoy the food as much :(

Just back from class - have also had a few more opinions and recommendations. The meatballs and mince are apparently much better than the burger and especially the sausage.

I will be interested to see if I can tell the difference in a cottage pie between mince and quorn myself

we are all so different as i love chicken and beef pieces but hate the mince. But love asda meat free mince. it is just a matter of trying different things. But also don't feel you have to try quorn you can do SW successfully without ever having quorn.

Hi Maximus

It may be the texture rather than the taste that you find odd if you are used to meat. There are loads of flavours to try.

I had a burger for lunch...on a wholemeal roll with 'fried' onion, chutney and cheese. Love it.

because some people are allergic to it and you hear theses scare stories....as i know it makes some people ill i worry i will be.
I was the samw when i ate meat, i ALWAYS overcooked it, i would never have anythign pink or tender so it was never that nice anyway so i dont miss it too much now that i am pretty much vegan (other than meat replacers)

i love quorn.. much prefer it to meat.. i'd never cook a mince type meal with real mince.. i'd always use quorn.. mmm

I have got quorn mince too but not yet tried it. So i will let u know when i do, the burgers and sausages i aint yet got but i will try it one thing at a time, thou im hearing more and more butchers and places do syn free sausages. So it may be a matter of asking if u go near a market or have a local one in ur area x x

I didnt originally like the taste of Quorn Mince, but after using it over the course of a year, I find normal mince too greasy tasting now. I must admit the sausages are a bit rubbery and bland tasting, but soon sorted with a bit of gravy, lol!

But I absolutely love Quorn Crispy Fillets!! I think they are 3-3.5 syns each but they are rather large so fill you up. They taste just like breaded chicken as well.

I am doing WW at the moment but am struggling and may just revert back to SW soon as I must admit, I am missing my chicken n chips, lol!

i like quorn mince, love quorn chicken nuggets but hate the quorn sausages.
i think it is a matter of trying all the products and seeing which you like. i am sure you will like at least 1 thing!

the chicken nuggets i think really taste like chicken. and are only 1/2 a syn each. i like putting them in with salad and some light caeser dressing for a fake caeser salad

the sausages are my least favourite quorn product as they taste nothing like meat sausages.
the burgers are ok- there are different kinds of burgers and some are nicer than others.

The meatballs are gorgeous!

I like the chicken style products and the burgers, the suasages are ok if they are drowned in gravy or baked beans.

But the mince..... Bleurgh!! I can dress it up in any guise (bolognaise, chilli etc..) but it still tastes awful and the texture is horrible.

Saying that I don't like any of the meat free mince products.
