Couch potato to 5k challenge

Hi all

Anyone fancy joining me on this challenge?
Couch to 5k - C25K Running Program gives all the details of the programme.

I did try it a few months back and got to week 2 but then got a chest infection and gave up. It's really good as the "run" bit doesn't have to be fast at first; the focus is just on getting your body used to the movement in a very slow controlled way.

The company would be great :)

Ok, you're on, l'll join you. :)
Haven't been jogging since end of June, l've had back problems, but it's got a good bit better and l'd really like to get fitter again.

Excellent Disney :) Not sure if you have an MP3 but you can download podcasts that tell you when to speed up etc and cheer you on. I'm going to start tomorrow so my days are Mon, Wed & Friday.

How's your first few days on CD been for you?

I'm on Team 6 - Here to Slimfinity, so if you'd like to join a team for support and encouragement feel free to join us, we've got two team spaces at the moment.

So far it's been good.. feeling very positive about the whole thing. Would love to join Slimfinity :) What do I need to do?

Great thanks - have just been to the thread.

I've been reading thedietguy.co.uk and he's really made me aware of my thinking which has been really helpful :)

Night night for now... going to bed so I can be up to go to the gym in the morning for Day 1 :)

I'll start the challenge tomorrow too. (don't use an MP3 player, my daughter has one though).

The dietguy newsletter is really good isn't it?

week 1, day 1 - went well this morning, really enjoyed it, gaps between jogs were longer than it says on the plan, but l'm pleased l got out there (it was windy!) and did it. It'll probably (almost certainly ) take me longer than 9 weeks to achieve the 5k jog, but as long as l'm making progress l'm happy.

Goreygirl, how did you get on? Do you go on a treadmill at the gym or walk/jog outdoors?

Hi

Well done you!

It was glorious here this morning so i drove down to the harbour and did a walk/jog down there. Managed to stick to the intervals but the last 2 were really hard. My joints are so tight but have started yoga (2nd class Wednesday) so hopefully that will help.

Wednesday morning again?

Wednesday morning again?

Yep, Mon, Wed & Fri should suit me. Next Monday though we're going to a wedding, so l'll swap that day for Sunday. On the 15th of this month we're going away for a short break with the kids to Callander, here in Scotland, but l'll keep up with the 5k program then. Where we're staying has really good places to jog.

Once l feel a bit fitter, l'd like to go back to Zumba class, which l stopped when my back was sore.

Are you doing any core exercises? They've recently revamped all the back pain recovery advice because they have realised that poor core muscle tone is the main reason that back pain recurs/persists.

You might find these helpful - both are reputable sites
Core stability exercises (have a beginners section)
Core Strengthening Programme

(My job is rehabing people back to work after injury/illness so I have to keep up to date on most current treatment regimes)

Thanks for the exercise links. I know that area is where l really need to tone up. Interesting to know how it relates to back pain too.

Kids are away to school, so l'm about to set off for my walk/jog, then work. It's dry here, l don't mind running in a bit of rain/drizzle, if it's bucketing down forget it, LOL

Planning on keeping up with the c25k program while l'm away for wedding then holiday.

Goreygirl, good luck for day 2 for you.

Hi Goreygirl and disneyparis- can i join in?

Your name caught my eye goreygirl, I live in the uk but am from west waterford and whilst living in dublin when i was young we spent many many holidays in ballygarret near gorey - lovely part of the world but i only ever see it now when going to and from the ferry!

I will be one day behind you on the programme if i start today but i can catch it up this week with an extra day at the weekend so i am on track for next week. I have just started cambridge again after many 'attempts' where i just paid lip service to it as my head was not in the right place - I have 75 lbs to lose but one of my other big ambitions is to be able to just go out my front door and run ( the village where i live is FULL of fab, slim, fit running women)

Hope you are both feeling good today x

Hope your run went well.

Hope your's did too Goreygirl.

Wk1, day2 - went down by the beach, it was cold, windy, bit cloudy for a good view of the isle of Arran, but it was enjoyable all the same.

Hi disneyparis - wouldnt dare attempt my jok ( walk/jog) in the daylight at the moment as its a busy village and i dont think people are ready for the sight of my arse going in one direction and my chest in the other...ill wait for cover of darkness thank you very much!

thanks goreygirl for the poscast innfo..currently trying to get them onto my shuffle but it doesnt seem to like them very much but i think they would be invaluable...hummm

sounds like you are also in a lovely place for walking/running disneyparis..i could not live any more in the middle of england i i miss the sea a lot as my parents live less than a mile from a lovely beach.

eek im excited about this now, it might take me a bit longer than 8 weeks to get into a canter as im still a bit sore from my 3rd c section 20 weeks ago but ill give it my best shot!

hi there dysneyparis, gorey girl and deisegirl, i really need to get fit so i will deffo join in, i have tried the couch potato to 5k thing before and i got to week 4 but i lost interest.....lack of willpower i think. But im here to stay this time ill be starting tom night.....week 1 here i come. good luck to you all see you soon xxx

Deisegirl, just take it easy if you've had a c-section fairly recently and are still sore.
I know it took me longer to recover and get back to jogging than l thought after l had an operation end of last year.

Congratulations on being a new Mum again.

Hi Kelly223, :welcome: to you too. :)
