Hi All,

Although I am really please with my weight loss I am loosing less and less every week. 6lb, 4lb then 3lb......(although this week wasn't a good week) is this just me? Am I doing something wrong? Is that the right amount of weight to be loosing each week?

Firstly, any loss is good whether it be a half a pound or 6lb. I have a feeling that my next weigh in tomorrow I won't have lost the same as I did on my first week which was 5lb.

Maybe it's the way our bodies work and initially we shed the 'easy' fat (if there is such a thing!) and then each week we lose the 'stubborn' fat which is more difficult to shift??? Just my theory!

3LB is excellent in my opinion and all I can suggest is that you go and weigh 3lb of butter or cheese and picture that amount gone from your body!!!

If your food intake is the same each month perhaps you could increase your exercise a bit more, even walking an extra ten minutes a day must help? x

Your first weeks weight loss is as much due to losing your store of glycogen as it is to do with losing the fat. We should normally carry a store of glycogen that accounts for about 2 to 3lb of weight, but when you restrict your calorie intake your body uses up the glycogen as well a losing the fat store, so your first weeks weight loss will be higher than any other week because of that. After that your body will readily shed some fat, but then that slows down as your body starts to adjust to the lower intake.

There is nothing you can do about it, its just the way the body works. You will find that after a few weeks weight loss will level out to 2 or 3 lbs a week. People get discouraged when their weight loss starts off really well, then levels out to this level, but losing 2 or 3lb a week is an excellent loss, especially once you have got to week 4 and beyond.

There will be times when your body stubbornly refuses to shift any weight for a week or maybe 2 weeks. This is another breaking point for many as they feel whats the point of eating so little and not losing anything, but again its just the bodys way of adjusting and the weight will start moving down again.

Its worth bearing in mind that once you come off a diet, or ease up, your weight will stall or increase by a few lbs as the first thing your body does with any excess calories is to put that store of glycogen back asap.

Hi Lynn, your post was really informative, I'd never heard of glycogen so appreciate this information. x

Here is a link that explains how glycogen is made in the body and how it is lost and replenished quickly when you diet.

Interesting part of it explains how each glycogen molecule require 4 molecules of water. so when you lose your glycogen you lose the water associated with it as well, resulting in the great first week loss. It also accounts for how you can gain a couple of pounds so easily after just one blow out meal, as the replaced glycogen needs 4 times its volume in water.

Water Weight vs. Fat Weight

This is really useful information, thank you so much Lynn, its helped me understand things a lot more clearly.
