I need advice Re: CD & Heart Conditions please

Hey all,

I'm after any factual advice you may be able to offer me please.

I just completed day 10 of SS, all seems ok, lost 16lbs - yay :D

However, my MIL just phoned concerned about me. Now, she's been totally FOR me doing SS, very supportive etc, so I know she's not trying to scupper me!

Her friend is a nurse in hospital weight loss & heart problem wards.
She says that they don't let people get into ketosis with heart probs because it can agrivate the heart condition.

I did see my Dr couple of years ago & got the all clear to do SS the 1st time I wanted to start it. Then about 18 months later (just after I got pregnant), we found out that my natural family (I'm adopted) has lots of Cardio Myopathy & so far 7 people have been killed by it.

Since finding this out, I've seen a heart specialist a couple of times & was heavily monitored during my pregnancy.

This why the nurse (who is usually quite an advocate of VLCD's) told my MIL that I ought to not be in ketosis.

So, I'm now very confused & DH is fretting Bless him. I've now broken SS & shall now be off it this coming week whilst we're away on holiday.

Hope this makes sense, I'm feeling a bit worked up, lol.
Thanks in advance of any replies,

Hiya Jules

My advice would be two-fold.

Firstly pop and see your GP and talk this through as he/she should be your major source of clinical advice.

Secondly give your counsellor a ring and get them to ring Jill at head office on Monday for her advice as she is the Cambridge medical supervisor.

I don't know enough to comment but I hope everything works out OK.

All the best :hug99:

Thanks for replying both of you.

I know you're right Mike & thanks for the tips.

I should have said, I do know that I'll have to check with the Dr again. I was just wondering if anyone here would have any info.

I'm wondering if I can do a version of CD without the ketosis.

I can't see the Dr for a couple of weeks 'cause we go away tomorrow, then I'll have to wait for an appointment.

Aah, my head's spinning with it & I feel cross 'cause I was doing so well & feeling better for losing the 16lbs. Pants!

Hi Jules sometimes a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.I'm sure the nurse has your best interests at heart but you say that you are being checked on by consultants and were monitored during pregnancy. The one thing you aren't saying is that you have any cardiac problems. If you did have the consultants would have told you. The medical history of your birth family suggests you may be in a high risk group but it doesn't guarantee you will develop the condition. I presume it is only one side of the family that has the problem and as half your genetic material will come from the other side of the family there is a chance that you will not develop any problems.Losing weight will reduce the strain on your heart so take Mike's advice and talk to your GP and put your mind at rest.

take care

Alex

Just a quick answer that the Cambridge 1000,1200 and 1500 programmes all are non-ketotic diets as the carb level is higher. Personally i think the 1200 plan is an excellent way of losing weight without being too hungry!
