Funny how time flies...

Fat-Boy-Slimmin

On a mission
This was going to be an update in my diary, but I felt it might be better in the main forum.

For a long time I’ve been overweight, since I was about 20 actually. For a number of years I really didn’t think about it that much. But when I did start to think about it, I never actually did enough to change things. I would always tell myself “I’ll start next week”. Next week came and either I had changed my mind or I tried and failed, so it was back to “I’ll start next week”. There was always an excuse to put it off for another week. The weeks turned into months and the months turned into years.

Why am I telling anyone this? Well I don’t want others to make the same mistake I did. I’ve wasted a lot of time, many years of my life. Not just with diets, but other things too. I’m not really a lazy person, because I can throw myself in to something and I won’t stop until it’s finished, even when all those around me want to put it off until tomorrow or next week, or even give up completely. But I know how easy it is to put things off and how easy it is to justify doing so to ourselves. I understand because I’ve been there many times myself.

I suppose a diet can seem like it will take a long time, which could easily put many people off, or have a big effect on their motivation and lead to failure. But if done properly, a diet is only for a short space of time out of our lives. Yes, it’s difficult and yes you have to make sacrifices and also work many parts of your life around it, but it’s only temporary.

When you move house, you have most things boxed up when you first move in to your new home. It’s inconvenient, it affects your “normal” everyday life, but it’s only temporary. You wouldn’t not move house because you don’t want to go through it. When you start a new job, you have to learn new routines and procedures etc, as well as meet and get to know new people. Again, it affects your “normal” day to day life, but you wouldn’t avoid a new or better job because of that.

Sooner or later a person has to realise that if they want or need to do something, it is going to take the same amount of time no matter when they start it. So why put something off if you can start it now. Not tomorrow, not next week, right now. It’s the same with not sticking to something, or not seeing it through, it just adds to the amount of time the whole process will take. So does it not make sense to do get on with it and do it properly as soon as you possibly can? Or would you prefer to be here in 5 or 10 year time saying “I’ll start next week”?

If you don’t start now, time will still be passing you by. Time doesn’t wait for you to get your act together. Time doesn’t pause while tomorrow or next week comes around. It keeps going not matter what.

To take a line from one of my favourite movies, “This is your life and it’s ending one minute at a time”. Yes, it’s only a line from a movie, but what a line eh?

time really does fly and your right its better to start right now instead of saying tommorow etc as thats the reason we get left behind but heres to a brighter future and lots of weight loss wooo hoooo :D

and well done on ur losses :D

Hi FBS, thanks so much for that post. It's really touched a nerve, to be honest. I have also wasted so much time doing exactly the same thing.
My new aim will be to make sure that I finish what I started and do things properly from now on.
Have a good day. :)

Reading that post was something that you read and you can't fault anything you've said it all makes sense .
What we all have to do is stop making excuses and start doing .
Great post !

i concur.

i have only one regret with respect to the cambridge diet: i wished i'd did this 3 years ago!

I love fight club too; that quote is also from a song by dust brothers.

Such an excellent soundtrack they did for the movie. The "This Is Your Life" single is a remix of "Medulla Oblongata" from the movie sountrack, with quotes that are in the movie but have all been re-done by Brad Pitt especially for the single. :)
