DIY SOS help

can anyone tell me why they were doing all that work in the DIY SOS big build last night. I missed the beginning part.

I think that the mum was sick not sure what she had & the dad was made redundant. The 3 daughters lived at the grandparents 4 2 years in a 2 bed flat.

What I don't understand is who pays for it?

They could come finish my place lol
