Wine and Atkins

Never give up
Just ducking in from the lipotrim forum to ask a question for my OH, who is on Atkins induction. Thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to reply (I'm hoping Jim at least will)!

Will drinking a whole bottle of wine knock him out of ketosis if he has no other carbs the whole day? He figures there are less than 20 carbs in a whole bottle. And he doesn't plan to do this all the time, LOL, it's a special occasion!

I doubt it, but who am I to say, lol. Special occasion? enjoy!! :D:D

Hiya

As a red wine lover, I wish it were so - but from what I've read, when you drink alcohol your body switches from burning fat to burning the alcohol - so I guess that means it knocks you out of ketosis and you need to start again.

But we all have special occasions, so why not? :)

i certainly wouldnt recommend drinking alcholol without food, jeez he'd be a cheap drunk with 3 full meals!!! lol

but i can drink a bottle at a time and i still lose weight....clean and green for meals 3 times a day (otherwise his body will think his throat has been cut) and then wine on the evening, he'll be find as long as he's not hungover the next day and needs a maccys brekkie to fix him haha xx

Drinking will not knock you out of ketosis, however your body will burn the booze before burning fat hence slowing the fat burning process.

I would recommend your hubby still eat his green leafy carbs as norm, and just count the carbs in the wine and add it to his daily values.

I agree with all the above, though a bottle of dry red used to get me drunk as a skunk during induction. :D

Hahaha, we know the feeling! We've actually swapped to a dry white that is only 9% & we still get wobbly :D

Spoilsport :)

It will be pretty interesting, as the old Susie would probably have got trolleyed. The new me will be stretching a G&T out as far as it will go :)

Got to agree with the above.
Two bottles of Jack Daniel's gets me a bit giddy too! :D

I'm ashamed to say it's just years of practice!

:D Oh Gawd !!
This is so not a good thread for a Wino like me
any excuse for a glass of the ole red stuff
and i'm on it like a rat up a drainpipe

Thanks all for your very helpful replies. Even more thanks because they said what I wanted them to say!

Starlight that must be fibs, surely :)
Steve, 2 bottles of JD & I know I would be dead. I don't think I could do 4 single measures,

lol

This is what Starlight means:-

DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL IF YOU ARE KETOTIC!
Alcohol is a powerful inhibitor of gluconeogenesis. In fact, it forces part of the gluconeogenic metabolic process into reverse. This means that if all the glucose in the blood is being derived from gluconeogenesis then the consumption of alcohol will inevitably cause the blood glucose level to fall. Worse still, the alcohol also stops ketone body production, thus leaving the brain entirely without fuel.
A person who is ketotic is 100% reliant on gluconeogenesis to maintain adequate levels of glucose in the blood. If, under these circumstances alcohol is taken, the person will become disorientated and might lose consciousness, not just from the alcohol, but from low blood sugar. Needless to say, this could be very dangerous, and even fatal.
Alcohol does not have these effects if the glycogen stores in the liver are normal. Under these circumstances the blood glucose level in the blood is maintained by the breakdown of liver glycogen, a process that is not influenced by alcohol. If a person becomes confused under these circumstances it is due simply to the pharmacological effects of the alcohol!

I definitely stuck by this on Exante being so low calorie but somehow with all the food you consume on Atkins it somehow does not seem to be the same - I am a lightweight anyway these days so I just moderate my intake.
