extra lean pork / lamb

Hi I'm a newbie (to posting, I've been following you all in the background for a while now - so thanks!).

I love love love cooking and following the SW recipies but a lot of them use "extra lean pork" or "extra lean lamb". I've cooked a lot of things with extra lean mince and would love to try difference mince flavour/ texture but I cannot for the life of me find this magical extra lean pork/ lamb. I've tried waitrose, tesco, morrison and sainsburys (no asda near me). Does anyone know where I can find it? And what exactly qualifies for extra lean (in terms of grams of fat per 100g)????

Thanks in advance for any pointers....

Tesco does Healthy Living (or Healthy Eating...not sure) minced pork which is extra lean :) I'm not sure about lamb though hun as I don't eat it. You could always buy normal lamb mince, brown it, then tip off all the fat and rinse it with boiling water :) xx

thanks for your quick response! I saw the healthy eating pork mince today, but it said it was 'typically less than 12% fat' or something like that, which seemed high to me compared with 'less than 3/5%' beef mince. do you think that's what SW refer to when they're talking about lean pork mince? when is lean pork mince lean enough? It's all very confusing....and there's a delicious sounding syn free (once the mince thing has been sorted) albondigas recipie that has my name on it!!!!!!

I'm almost 100% sure that the healthy eating pork mince is free hun :) I guess pork is quite a fatty meat, so 12% is probably less than the full fat stuff.

I use a gravy strainer with all mince, even the extra lean stuff, to remove the fat from it. I just don't like the taste of the fat so it's easier to get rid of it!

If you don't mind me asking, what's albondigas? I love pork mince but never know what to with it other than a ragu with smoked paprika :) xx

meatballs to you and me - spanish recipie. i basically went through all my slimming world recipie books (5 of them) and noted all free ones to give myself ideas for lunch and dinner. i'm gradually working through them but find myself going back to the old favourites - chicken curry, veg dahl, bolognese etc etc and need to break free! I should check the syn online thing to see if they have the tesco branded pork - that's a great idea! D'oh

Brilliant news!!!! Thanks for your advice. Can't believe I didn't think of it myself since I practically live on that bit of the website!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been a lil' lost as the only place I found extra lean mince (morrisons) has stopped stocking it and I have been buying lean mince and hoping for the best! shall put this into practice tomoro for my spag bol!

I have to admit I dont buy any extra lean mince meats, I always buy the ordinary, (much cheaper) & brown, strain & rinse off with boiling water several times. I'm not suggesting its right, but Its always worked for me!
